Universidad de Sevilla (US)

Universidad de Sevilla, C/ S. Fernando, 4, 41004 Sevilla, Spain
4.24 / 5 based on 438 reviews.
Description:

Why? When I first got there, I lived w/a single woman who was very nice. But I did not like the accomodations or feeling like I had to be home for all meals or call if I wasn't going to be there. I felt like my freedom was a bit restricted. A couple of people I was on the program with like living w/their families, though. I saw their accomodations-they were better than mine.
Personal comments:
I moved out of the Senora's apartment and looked for my own apartment 2 weeks into my time there. I wish I had spent more time apt. hunting b/c I was not in a good location. But I did enjoy the people I lived with. They were from all over-one was Dutch/Italian, one was Spanish, one was Swedish, and one was from New York. I was the only female there w/a bunch of guys for most of the time, but it was not a problem at all. Nobody was actually home a lot of time anyway.

Why? If I were to go back to Sevilla, I would choose to live in an apartment with a Spanish roommate so that I would be better able to meet locals and thus speak more Spanish
Personal comments:
As I mentioned, I went through ISA (International Studies Abroad). However, Vanderbilt is not associated with ISA, so I had to go through another american university in order to be able to study at the University of Sevilla. SO, I went through ASU. The housing arrangements were adequate - I enjoyed the family I lived with and the location was great, but I shared a very small bedrooom with another girl (who happened to be my friend) and felt cramped a lot of the time.

Why? i had a great experience with my second host family.i felt apart of their family and it made the adjustment of living in another country easier.the first family with whom i lived i just didn´t get along that well with them.
Personal comments:
the price for accommodation is too expensive for the normal family with whom a student will be placed.the cheapest way for a student would be to live with other students, but in many cases, one will often find foreign exchange students living with other foreign exchange students, and therefore losing the opportunity to learn the other language.

Personal comments:
The school did not help set up housing for us, so upon arrival we were obligated to go look for a place ourselves. But I would recommend doing the same because once you arrive there are many postings listed all over the campus, the city and on the internet for apartments for rent, probably because there are so many international students coming in and out. There is a good company that helps you with looking for an apartment if you still feel stuck and the website/email is called roomatesevilla.com

Why? I've lived in apartments with Spaniards both years that I was living in Spain for study and work. I think you gain a more realistic experience and understanding of the culture when living with people around your own age, especially if you become friends with them. You are also able to practice your language skills on a daily basis.
Personal comments:
The university program initially set us up with a family. However, we lived with other American students and paid too much money for the time and place. I chose to find my own housing.

Why? My apartment was located in the Pedro Salvador neighborhood near the Betis Stadium. The commute to the Rectorado on Avenida de San Fernando was about 30 minutes by bus (#33). I would have preferred to stay closer to the university (at walking distance), perhaps in Triana, Los Remedios, or in the Santa Cruz neighborhood.
Personal comments:
The apartment itself was fine. I shared a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom space with 3 other university students.

Why? An apartment or a house give you the most freedom!
Personal comments:
I had a great apartment, everything quite new and clean. Maybe the landlord could have been better, and there was also a lot of noise (I was in Calle Recaredo, a street with very much traffic and... AMBULANCES!), but it was only 5 to 10 minutes away from the centre, and just very nice to live in.

Why? I believe that my Spanish speaking skills improved vastly because of the interaction that I had on a daily basis with my family. The classroom learning focused more on listening and writing, but I feel that speaking is crucial as well. I also learned a great deal more about the culture and lifestyle of Spain by living with a family.

Why? I really enjoyed living with a host family, but the next time studying or living abroad I would like to share an apartment/house with people who are the same age as myself.
Personal comments:
It was a wonderful experience living with a host family during my stay in Spain. I was able to be immersed in the culture of Spain.

If returning, I would choose: I would live in an apartment with spanish students
Why? This would give me the optimum opportunity to speak spanish as well as become familiar with students my age in a different country. I enjoyed my time where I lived but I told myself while I was still there that if I came back that is what I would do.
Personal comments:
I was pleased overall with the accommodations.

Why? You are independent, you can choose your roommates, the location and many other things.. but the most important thing is... you live with native speaker and in their cultural surroundings.. you are involved in the living and the culture, it's the best way to improve, learn, study .. to train the foreign language abroad!
Personal comments:
I found my residence in the Internet.. she was a spanish girl, from Sevilla, so I liked this aspect.. she introduced me in her city and country.. I was introduced in her life..with her friends and family.. that was great! It was a room in a flat (in HER flat.. that was the only disadvantage.. she was the "boss"!!) and we lived together with her boyfriend.. the flat was quite big and comfortable.. very clean!! we had all... kitchen+equipment, washing machine,oven,microwave,... 2!!bathrooms,so I had one for myself :) that was perfect.. my room was small but it was enough. I made a mistake at the beginning, I wouldn't do this once again.. I didn't have a contract with her.. a written one!! THAT'S IMPORTANT!

This university was very good. Sometimes there were delays with grading, but in the end, grades were posted and every faculty member I came in contact with was very helpful.

Why? You have more independance and its a great way to meet new flatmates that are either natives to the country or are also erasmus students.
Personal comments:
The university provided a list of flats and apartments to rent but as everyone was arriving at the same time they were occupied quickly.

Why? The location right in the centre of the city meant that it was possible to live a less isolated life that that of people living in University accommodation.
Personal comments:
The home students in Seville tend to live with their parents on the outskirts of the city which means that the students living in the centre tend to be Erasmus students. This does make it difficult to make Spanish friends and leads to a slightly isolated foreign community in the centre of Seville. I never saw the university accommodation but its location, away from the main art of the city was a major drawback in my eyes.

Why? My main purpose of living with a host family was to learn the language as well as possible during my time in Seville. After returning many times and maintaining contacts with people in Seville, I am confident that I could live on my own or with a friend.
Personal comments:
I was impressed with how CIEE handled housing. I was very happy with my homestay but others were not, and CIEE made every effort to accommodate all students. Overall, I thought CIEE Liberal Arts in Seville was a great program and have recommended it to other students wanting to study abroad in Spain through Penn State.

Why? When I chose to study abroad in Spain and enhance my Spanish speaking skills, I felt that it was crucial to be immersed into the culture by living with a family. A family will incorporate you into their own and teach you certain things that you would not otherwise be introduced to living alone. I believe that living amongst a family was the best experience in my life at that time. Now that I am older, more mature and responsible, I believe that living in an apartment is more practical when upholding a job.
