Why? Because I enjoy my independence and university arranged accommodation - both colleges and with a family are double the price or more.
Personal comments:
Go at least 5 working days before the start of your course because many many others are looking for accommodation a couple of days before the start and it is quite stressful and expensive calling about so many flats and competing with other students. Be prepared to make quick decisions and make your deposit on the spot. I say working days because the university doesn't update the rooms database at the weekend. However do not despair, there is always free accommodation advertised and you will find a good flat.

Why? A lot of independence, cheaper compared to campus accommodation
Personal comments:
Campus accomodation is very expensive (around 500 Euros/month) and most comments I heard weren't particularly positive (noisy, small rooms...). Generally it is absolutely no problem to find a room in a shared apartment at a reasonable price. However, try not to have exceedingly high expectations in terms of facilities at the apartments.

Why? with spanish people- you´ll soon become very good friends and get to know a lot of the culture
Personal comments:
I arrived early in order to search for a room. The two Spanish girls I am living with are very lovely. We have a great time. Of course, it would be ever better if they also "would love" to clean the apartment but I enjoy my stay with them

Why? When sharing an apartment with locals, you have the opportunity to get to know the culture and local customs. At the same time you are not too dependent on your fellow tenants.
Personal comments:
Housing is not arranged by the university, although they do provide tips on where and how to find accomodation.

Why? Because you can lead a more independent life by living in a flat in Spain
Personal comments:
There was a service on campus that helped any student to find accomodation be it in a residence or in a flat as it had a list of adverts

They do have a fair bit of accomodation available through the university but it's not particularly pleasant.

Why? I had a great time in halls so why would I want to change? More people to talk to in halls than a flat.
Personal comments:
The hall "Santa Isabel" was in my opinion the best bit of the university. Well organised and staffed with lots of activities/parties put on throughout the year. Cleaned spotlessly twice a day. Good location on the main campus. I made the effort to make friends with the Spaniards and they welcomed me as one of their own.

Why? Because you live with natives and you can practice speaking with them and learn about their culture. Also, you have more independence and one can come and go as they plase and eat when one wants.
Personal comments:
while living in the apartment i made livelong friends whom i meet now on a regular basis. My landlord also offered me a room in her flat when i visit the city in the future.

Why? University halls are expensive, sparse, some are far from the city centre, and the food is awful...or so I was told.
Personal comments:
Housing is in short supply and so is a bit more expensive than you may think. There is some housing that is seriously below standard. Many landlords simply refuse to rent to males, and girls generally refuse to share with males. So if you're a guy, get here early!
