HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: rented a room
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I chose to rent a room in a flat in Venice, the Uni accomodation was on the mainland and I preferred to get the maximum experience of living in such a beautiful city as Venice.
Personal comments:
The UNi had accomdation in Mestre, which was the part of Venice on the mainland, which was very basic and like London. Venice (city) is built on a series of small islands and I chose to find accomodation in Venice (city) to immerse myself in venetian life and culture for my full academic year. STUDENT LIFE

Economics, Erasmus
Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
the place with the most Buzz is a square full of cafe's called 'Campo Santa Margherita in the student area of venice (in the centre). There are lots of nice little cafes and bars (Cafe noire and Bar Rosso are cool!). This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Ca Foscari is one of Italys top Universities. The cambridge of Italy. Top rate courses means that it is very difficult to actually get a place as an international erasmus student. But if admitted to the Uni you will benefit greatly!! However one point to mention is that the lectures are all in very detailed Italian, so your italian must be first class!
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Perhaps an introductory week explaining the processes of the Uni to foerign students. The lectures were excellent, but many foreign students are unfamiliar with how exams and essays are to be submitted etc.. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: Italian
Was learning Italian a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Italian How much did you improve your Italian?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
It was quite difficult at first to communicate with the locals but when we started making friends they were very patient with us and understanding. Life got much easier as they would help us even with academic problems. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES
by Anthony, University College London, London, United Kingdom

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Personal savings Other sources of funding:
None Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
Accomodation is less in Venice (city)than London. Mestre, the part on the mainland is even cheaper but if you are going to live in venice try and live in Venice itself (the city) so you can live amongst the canals and the beautiful palazzos! Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall: was the same price as at home. Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
when renting a room you need 3 months deposit which is a lot to hand out in one go. If you can avoid the tourist places (San Marco) try instead to go to San Polo and Dorsoduro areas.. they are excellent, just as beautiful and less expensive! OVERALL

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Venetians have to cope with millions of tourists every year, so it is really hard to get to know one In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Be sure you want to stay at Venice, choose the time of your stay carefully (eg. summer is incredibly hot and humind and full of tourists). Teachers try to make up for missing resources, try to do projects that do not depend much on extensive research FINAL COMMENTS
Some people like Venice for a day or two, otherwise the completely different way of life (without cars etc.) seems to complicated etc. If you like hiking, the Belluno Dolomites are only one hour away. Another way of saving a little bit of money is by doing your shopping at Panorama/Auchan. Free buses leave at the Piazzale Roma This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
