Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I like to have my freedom. I like to live somewhere that I have chosen. It's certainly easier to pick university accomodation - and can be a useful way of meeting people but in Montpellier I wanted to be in the centre and I already knew some people from my home University there so wasn't too worried about friends. I wouldn't rent off the same person as she wasn't very pleasant, though.

I saw where some of my friends were staying in student accomodation. It was just a small room. Nothing special. There were restaurants on site. I don't think student accomodation in France is as 'user-friendly' as in the UK mainly because many French students go home at the weekend. Apparently the heating in the halls was turned off at the weekend.

Housing in Montpellier is tough. Finding your own appartment is challenging, and gave me headaches for about two weeks. If you have a chance, look for a French room mate, but don't get your hopes too high, French students tend to live alone, not with room mates. Get a phone as early as possible to call landlords once the newspaper gets out!

Living on campus was a good experience for me. It was a good chance to get to know people. The only problem was the cleanliness of my fellows using the kitchen and the bathroom and not cleaning up afterwards. But nevertheless living on campus is a good start in France not knowing anyone

The room was small, the cooking facilities non-existant, the bathrooms sketchy, but the life was extraordinary. It was spartan to say the least.

Staying in an apartment gives you a kind of indenpendence that you cannot really achieve when you are staying on a campus or in a family. I also do believe that it is cheaper and more convinient to stay in an apartment.

Since I did not stay in a housing that was arranged by the university I don't have any comments.

It's a great way to save money. Everyone is different. If you can live in an apartment in your home country you can do it abroad. It's not that different.

It's difficult to find good housing that's cheap. It's like everywhere, if you willing to spend a little more money you will have a better place to live.
