3.82 / 5 based on 48 reviews.
Description:
As early as 1423, the high reputation of the University of Franche-Comté was enough to attract famous teachers and students. Originally located in Dole, the University serving both the Duchy and the County of Burgundy. It was transferred to Besançon in 1691 by the King of France, Louis XIV. It was closed down during the French Revolution in 1793, but Emperor Napoleon re-opened it in 1809.

Was learning French a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my French
How much did you improve your French?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: At ease in most situations
Personal comments:
Small classes meant that you always had to follow the lesson but it also meant you could ask if you didnt understand. The course I did, LEA had french students studying English on it too, so there was lots of opportunity for working together and helping each other. In general speaking with other international students is easier because its at a slower pace and you've got a lot in common, but my french improved the most by talking to French students.

And I have travelled a lot through the country, so I have communicated a lot in french.

Personal comments:
I understood my professors most of the time even at the beginning, but they spoke clearly and more slowly than everyone else. I was very intimidated by people outside of the classroom for awhile because they spoke so fast and and slurred words together. It took a lot of work and getting used to.

Personal comments:
I knew a lot less French when I arrived in France than I thought I did! It was a real struggle at first but hard work and a love for the language paid off. One semester is not enough to fully speak the language. In December when you have to leave you are just feeling at ease iin the language. Then you have to go.
