HOUSING
by Alexander, Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, Vienna, Austria

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Guesthouse of the Universiteit Maastricht
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Guesthouse of the Universiteit Maastricht
Why? Because even though the prices for the rooms are quite high the social aspect of living close to a lot of other exchange students is only given when living in the guesthouse. Otherwise it is far more difficult to get to know other people.
Personal comments:
Great atmosphere among exchange students, good leisure time facilities (Tennis courts, ...) but housing prices in the Netherlands are generally higher compared to Austria and the management of the guesthouse knows that exchange students are dependent on their services. Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Karneval, Christmas Markets, and the many many many bars and clubs. There is a disco in a converted church, as well. Ideal location for travel - last minute flights from brussels or amsterdam are a short train trip away - went to Spain, Turkey, Hungary, Italy... ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
The level of the courses is very high! Very good language skills are crucial to follow the courses without major problems and a realistic chance to pass the exams. Furthermore exchange students have the same rights and duties as regular students, so there is absolutely NO "exchange student" bonus! But the quality of the courses is very good and most of the contents are interesting.

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English Was learning the local language a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my knowledge How much did you improve your English?
My level before: No problems in any areas (including slang) My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) How much did you improve your local language?
My level before: Did not speak it My level after: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) Personal comments:
Nearly everybody is fluent in English in the Netherlands, so communication is no problem at all. Due to the fact that exchange students from all over the world spend their semester or year abroad in Maastricht and the cohesion between exchange students is generally very high I had a lot of opportunities to practice Spanish and French as well! When coming back to Austria I got really used to speaking English, Spanish and French with different groups of people. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES
by Victor, Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, Sofija, Bulgaria
European Studies, Erasmus
The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
An ERASMUS grant Other sources of funding:
Family Personal savings Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work Personal spending habits:
Everything is double or triple what I pay for at home. That is, however, due to the economic situation in my country of origin and were I from any other European state, I would have not had any financial problems. Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Aldi is just around the corner of the Guesthouse. Don't withdraw money from the ATMs when from a home bank - make sure you make an account with the local ones. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

OVERALL

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Nothing In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
The study is time consuming but not so difficult as it is sometimes mentioned. If you study regularly than it will not be a problem to pass. The university itself is well organized and student friendly. FINAL COMMENTS
It was an amazing experience. Everything you read about exchange semester is true! You will not be disappointed. The main advantage is that you get in contact with people from all over the world and that network could be very useful in future. In addition, you can find "best friends".
