HOUSING

Humanities, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? Halls of residence are well expensive, but it's the best way to meet English students. Also the common facilities are generally good (bar, computer room, tv rooms, laundrette etc.) and there are parties/activities organised. Everybody is complaining about the food, but cooking everyday is not my idea of fun, so I didn't mind that either.
Personal comments:
In my days, Tapton and Sorby sucked. However, Sorby was merged with Earnshaw so it might have improved. Apartments are all close to the Halls (except for Victoria - in the city centre). In case you really can't afford pre-arranged housing, you can go to the message board in the student union. Plenty of rooms offered, but not the best way to immerge in the student life.. STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Nightlife: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Activities, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
there were several good night clubs, of which my favourite place was roxy, especially the students' night on wednesdays. pulse'n'vogue was quite impressive, uropa was pretty fine although small, and republic had some nice parties as well. also the theme parties at the uni were cool. the best pubs were in broomhill (i can't remember the names..) where i lived. as for shopping, you could find everything you needed in meadowhall shopping centre. ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
taking courses in other departments than your own can be somewhat complicated, so you should contact the lecturer early before the course starts and ask whether you can take part in it. also make sure you take appropriate modules as some of them may be too difficult or too easy. the first digit of the module's code tells you in which year you should take it.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
everything was well organised, i can't complain. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. Personal comments:
It was hard to communicate with English students because they seemed not to have interest in foreign students. Since we were plenty of internationals it was essential to speak English all the time. But unfortunately the improvement is not as good as communicating with native speakers would have been. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES
by silvia, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Humanities, Erasmus
The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
An ERASMUS grant Other sources of funding:
Family Personal savings Government assistance Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
Grocery shops are cheaper than supermarkets! Busses and taxis cheaper, but trains are well expensive. Student clubnights are cheap: Vodka coke for 1.50. Develop your pictures at home. There's a H&M in Meadow Hall. Get a uni sweater at the student's union. Tesco is a relatively cheap supermarket. Travel, Nightlife: was more expensive than at home. Food, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Opening a bank account is difficult! Go to NatWest Broomhill. Messageboard in the student union for second hand stuff. IT centres are ussually quite crowded (especially around exams). Try the one at the Economics department, it's a walk but it's open all night. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

OVERALL

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
The expense level, possibilities to students (travel, banking, grants) In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Great fun, great activities, a bit bureaucratic. FINAL COMMENTS
Try to have some information in advance about the country, use coaches- not trains, cook individually. Meet wonderful people around the world. BUT: Don't fall in love with somebody who is not from your home country or any area near to you. It will break your heart after the exchange period.
