HOUSING
by Laura, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, United Kingdom
Language, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: Student residence
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? Great for meeting new friends and improving language skills.
Personal comments:
If you are at the "Studentensiedlung am Seepark" I would recommend staying in one of the larger flats with 8-12 people per floor. Freiburg have accommodation specifically for international students at "Europa Haus", you may get your own bathroom and kitchen area, however there is no opportunity for meeting native German speakers there.

Personal social experience
Activities
KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Activities, Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Freiburg has many cozy and crazy places to go out at night for such a small town. In the StuSie (student dorms) there's a student-run bar with particularly cheap drinks if you can't afford to go out, or just want a nearby place to play foosball and see your friends.

It is Germany, so the courses are taught in German. Be prepared for that (however, there some English lit cousres taught in English). Also, be prepared to work, it is challenging

My opinion of the university assessment

Overall
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German
How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: At ease in most situations
Personal comments:
So many people speak english very well and are eager to practice it, so I didn't find so many oppurtunities to imrove my communication skills. I feel like i should have got a lot more out of living there for one year.

I spent a wonderful year there, but it depends on several factor: how long you stay, where you live and your room-mates.
