HOUSING
by Laura, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, United Kingdom
Language, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Type of housing: Student residence
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? Great for meeting new friends and improving language skills.
Personal comments:
If you are at the "Studentensiedlung am Seepark" I would recommend staying in one of the larger flats with 8-12 people per floor. Freiburg have accommodation specifically for international students at "Europa Haus", you may get your own bathroom and kitchen area, however there is no opportunity for meeting native German speakers there. STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities, Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Freiburg has many cozy and crazy places to go out at night for such a small town. In the StuSie (student dorms) there's a student-run bar with particularly cheap drinks if you can't afford to go out, or just want a nearby place to play foosball and see your friends. My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
It is Germany, so the courses are taught in German. Be prepared for that (however, there some English lit cousres taught in English). Also, be prepared to work, it is challenging

Get used to German professor never being on campus. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
So many people speak english very well and are eager to practice it, so I didn't find so many oppurtunities to imrove my communication skills. I feel like i should have got a lot more out of living there for one year. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Family Other sources of funding:
Personal savings DAAD Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
Food from supermarkets is very good value. Obviously, i was making international calls, which i don't do at home. Travel was expensive as i wasn't there for long enough for it to be worth getting a railcard. Travel, Telephone: was more expensive than at home. Nightlife, Overall: was the same price as at home. Food, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
ikea for everything:) but not pots or pans, far too expensive there. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

To organise a better studying plan. its not so easy especially when you wish to find corresponding course. In my opinion:
I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Its a really good one. lot of high skilled teachers, lot of cultural events and classes. One can attend class like Cinema or American law... FINAL COMMENTS
I spent a wonderful year there, but it depends on several factor: how long you stay, where you live and your room-mates. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
