Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Unter den Linden 6, 10099 Berlin, Germany
Description:
The university was founded in Berlin in 1810, and the foundation concept of Wilhelm von Humboldt gave it the title "Mother of all modern universities". This concept envisaged a "Universitas litterarum" which would achieve a unity of teaching and research and provide students with an all-round humanist education. This concept spread throughout the world and gave rise to the foundation of many universities of the same type over the next century and a half.

HOUSING
Personal assessment
Type of housing: A room exchange
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Since I just rented a room in a appartment, if I were to go back I would want my own appartment. I did have full run of the appartment, but I think it would be better to have my own place.
Personal comments:
pretty good, my program IES was the one who found the students places to live. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

ACADEMIC
My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Courses are run so differently over there, it is hard to compare the way courses are taught there as opposed to in the US.

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my German How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
It was hard to meet germans at first, but as soon as you became friends with them it was easier to pick up more vocab and slang. Hanging around with Americans too much will hurt your german. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES
The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Personal savings Other sources of funding:
Family Government assistance Work opportunities:
I didn't want/need to work Personal spending habits:
Living in Germany gave me so many more opportunities to travel throughout Europe. One can't travel or live without spending money. Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone: was more expensive than at home. Food: was the same price as at home. Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
cell phones are good, allow people to get intouch with you anywhere, not too expensive either. Look for the special numbers that the phone companies have that give you special rates to the US, they are definitely worth it. It's much cheaper to call home than it is for people in the US to call ther This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

OVERALL
Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
bring an extra bag for the stuff that you need to bring home. In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Keep allowing international students, it helps spread culture. FINAL COMMENTS
Make sure you are social, that is the real way to learn the culture and the language. Television and radio helped me a lot with idoms and slang, its good to have one of each. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
