HOUSING
by Zainab, Rutgers, New Brunswick, United States
Political Science, Independent
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Close to the city, and there's more freedom to choose the type of lodging. Plus, the university has a service for students looking for housing, which is really helpful!
Personal comments:
The only downside is that appartments are expensive...but there's something for every budget within a 25 minute bus/train ride...from what I've heard, student "dorms" are an interesting experience, but not too independent or comfortable

Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.

Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Activities, Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Tangente: hiphop all night long! Wespennest: a bar next to Tangente, also a lot of hiphop and R&B Die Nachtschicht: night club, not far from the station

ACADEMIC
by Laura, St. Mary´s College of Maryland, St. Mary´s City, United States
Language, University Agreement
My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
The German university system is very different from the US system, especially in the professor-student relationship, and the work load (it was much lighter during my year in Germany). Within the German as a Foreign Language Department there were few classes that were more appropriate for short-term students, whose German was not at the fluency level. Also there was only a small number of computers with internet access available to students who did not have internet in their apartments.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
Perhaps more intergration or at least interaction between foreign students and German students and a more focused program for short-time students (those students only there for a semester or a year).

Language difficulties
Social
KEY:
No problems.
I coped pretty well.
Sometimes it was difficult.
It was a constant struggle.
Educational
Administrative / Institutional
Overall
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
How much did you improve your German?
My level before: Basic phrases
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
Everybody speaks English, and sometimes, the other German students want to practice their English with you! If you ask them to correct your German so as to help you out with YOUR German skills, they will happily (and most politely!) oblige.
