HOUSING
by cmpellissier, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Marketing and Sales Management, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Many flats are available in City Centre.
On Campus accomodation is out of town and public transport stops running quite early.
Rented accomodation allows more independence and the cost is about the same.
Personal comments:
Univesity accomodation is quite far from city centre. Cost wise it is cheaper but the difference isn't great! Some flats they offer are in a relatively dangerous area - a friend of mine got mugged by his flat This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Travel: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Activities, Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
CAfe Notre Dame...I was the manager Couche Tard Pub -great place v. international, I worked there London Pub- Also good for a laugh Vieux Manoir(Club)- You'll end up there most nights Vertigo (Club)- expensive Shithole in the city centre! The bigger clubs are out of town! I recommend La Choue (for the experience) Don't miss the arrival of the Nouveau Beaujolais! Great trip offered into the region with an all night drinking spree! ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
I think it is important to be informed in the beginning how the evaluation is going to work.Several times, the teachers are not really sensitive to the fact that erasmus are not native students.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
The french evaluation is really specific.Usually, most courses request a written essay where students need to explain the issues learnt in class. For exchange students this task is not easy at all. i think sometimes tje teachers should be more compreeensive about this and provide another type of exam for the exchange students. Language difficulties
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my French How much did you improve your French?
My level before: No problems in any areas (including slang) My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
You will find that you interact mainly with other foreign students. Make an effort to meet local students and you will learn more. Alternatively get involved in activities outside the university. Eg. I played rugby for a local club and got a job in a bar This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
An ERASMUS grant Other sources of funding:
Family Personal savings Government assistance Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
Student accomodation is dirt cheap but not luxurious. Drink in supermarkets is dirt cheap but in the pubs and niteclubs it is a rip off. Cook for yourself cos i never did at first until i realised it would be way cheaper to. Nightlife: was more expensive than at home. Food, Travel, Overall: was the same price as at home. Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Thank god for technology. If i was low on cash, i just sent a text message to my parents mobile fone saying i needed money for books and they would put some in my account using 24 hour intermet and phone banking. Unfortunately that never happened alot though This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Left at quite an easy academic semester in home university. Remeber to talk to years ahead. Did not eventually effect my overall final degree. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
