LIUC Università Cattaneo Castellanza (LIUC)
Carlo Cattaneo University, Corso Matteotti 22, 21053 Castellanza, Italy
Description:
The University was founded in 1991 on the initiative of the Industrial Association for the Province of Varese (UNIVA) and was formally recognised by a ministerial decree in October 1991 as an independent, self financing University. It had its first graduates in July 1995. Since its foundation the University has a 4-year course in Business and Economics, since 1994/5 a 3-year course in Logistics and Production Engineering and since 1998/9 a 4-year course in Law and Economics. 1999-2000 will see the start of a five year course in Engineering Management. The teaching philosophy of the University is based on the thinking of the Lombard economist, Carlo Cattaneo, who identified the human factor as one of the essential resources for economic development, foreseeing a need which is currently at the centre of the debate on company culture.

HOUSING
Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? Meet the most people that way
Personal comments:
The rooms were small but they were comfortable. The situation was away from all places of interest. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE
Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students interact with the local community without much university involvement
Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Near the university there are not many places to go maybe Schmukers bar is a good place to go but there were no places to dance nearby. In Milan which was really hard to access at night without a car then there were plenty of places to go (but quite expensive). This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

ACADEMIC
My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Dont chose too many that are all piled in at the end of the semester as I did as the work really piles up when you need to study for exams.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
To start all courses at the start of the semester so that the students have less time in the beginning at more time at the end when they want to study and have their last weeks remembered fondly instead of boring and the only thing that anybody did was study This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. Personal comments:
I had to do a basic course in Italian at the start of the semester and it was really helpful however, the teacher only spoke in Italian and when it came to exams it was really hard to know what was going on especially when i did not know any Italian before i went to Italy and some people in the class did so they were teaching everyone at the same level which i don't think was the best thing to do. EXPENSES
The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Family Other sources of funding:
An ERASMUS grant Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
It is slightly more expensive to live in Italy than it is at home and i believe i spent more because it felt like i was on holiday most of the time (if it wasnt for the rain) Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Telephone: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
I got another Erasmus grant towards the end of the semester which i did not know i was going to get. Cost saving tips are to take some cooking utensils with you as i had to buy them here because they did not tell me that they would not be provided. Alsocook in groups it work out cheaper. OVERALL
Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I wish i had found out more about the culture before going and about the cultures of the other Erasmus students. In my opinion:
I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
I do not personally think that this university is a good host for international student because it is a private university and the Italian students are not as friendly as others that i encountered and the university is in the middle of nowhere as some people liked to say. FINAL COMMENTS
Travel very light you will not believe the amount of shopping that you will do here and travelling especially when the weather is nice. Don't be shy and don't judge people too early people change when they settle down and usually you will find that they change for the better.
