About the role

A Train Mechanical Fitter is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and
fitting mechanical components in railway rolling stock, ensuring the safe and efficient
operation of trains. This role involves performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical faults, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The Train Mechanical Fitter works closely with other engineers and technicians to ensure trains are fit for service.

What you'll be doing

Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and inspections of mechanical
components in trains, including engines, gearboxes, brakes, and suspension
systems.

Identify mechanical faults and carry out necessary repairs or replacements to
ensure safe and reliable operation.

Work on various systems such as hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems
within the rolling stock.

Conduct testing of repaired components and systems to ensure proper
functionality.

Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues quickly and efficiently to
minimize downtime.

Investigate and report any recurring issues or faults, suggesting improvements
or upgrades where necessary.

Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance activities, including lubrication,
adjustment, and inspection of train systems.

Follow maintenance schedules and checklists to ensure all mechanical
components meet safety and performance standards.

Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements during
maintenance and repairs.

Install and fit mechanical components, such as wheels, axles, and engines,
ensuring correct alignment and functionality.

Assemble and fit parts as required for train repairs or upgrades, following
technical specifications and safety guidelines.

Maintain and update records of all parts installed or replaced.

Adhere to strict safety protocols and standards when carrying out maintenance
work to ensure a safe working environment.

Ensure compliance with relevant railway regulations, safety standards, and
industry best practices.

Perform risk assessments and contribute to safety audits to identify and
eliminate potential hazards.

Maintain accurate records of all maintenance, repairs, and installations carried
out.

Document any defects, repairs, and parts used in accordance with company
procedures.

Provide detailed reports to senior maintenance personnel or supervisors on the
condition of rolling stock and any issues identified.

Work closely with other engineers, fitters, and maintenance staff to resolve
complex mechanical issues and ensure efficient train operations.

Participate in team meetings, sharing knowledge and experiences to improve
maintenance practices and techniques.

Assist in the training and mentoring of junior fitters or apprentices.

Stay updated on the latest mechanical systems, tools, and technologies related
to railway operations and train maintenance.

Suggest improvements to maintenance practices, tools, and processes to
enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs

Who we're looking for

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Trade qualification or apprenticeship in mechanical fitting, engineering, or a
related field is required.

Experience as a mechanical fitter, ideally within the railway or
automotive industry.

Previous experience with rolling stock or heavy machinery is highly preferred.

Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, including trains' engines, braking,
and suspension systems.

Ability to use diagnostic tools and equipment to troubleshoot and repair faults.

Proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, and machinery related to
mechanical maintenance.

Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

Familiarity with railway safety regulations and standards.

Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Relevant certifications in mechanical fitting, safety, or railway operations
(e.g., train maintenance, first aid, welding) are a plus.

A valid driver's license (if required for transport or access to train stations and
yards).

Working Conditions:

The role may involve working in a railway yard, depot, or workshop, with exposure to
noise, heat, and sometimes hazardous materials.

Occasional shift work, weekend, or overtime may be required to accommodate train
schedules or urgent repairs.

Some manual labour and heavy lifting may be necessary when handling mechanical
parts or tools.
