Job Description:

Nokia is providing equipment and services at the cutting edge of technology to connect intelligence. To meet the needs of customers spread over 100 countries, our scientists and engineers are constantly innovating and developing future technologies that significantly transform the way people and machine interact.
Powered by the innovation of Nokia Bell Labs, the company is at the forefront of creating the technologies that are increasingly at the heart of our connected lives. Nokia Bell Labs mission is to define the future of communications and networking and deliver disruptive innovations that redefine human existence and business realities. Within Bell Labs, the Optical Systems and Devices Research Lab investigates forward-looking research activities for future optical networks.

Optical fiber telecommunications has contributed to change our socio-economic landscape, by allowing interconnectivity among individuals and/or organizations on the global scale. To support these requirements, optical fiber systems are constantly being expanded and upgraded. Bell Labs hosts a world-class optical transmission lab, with a longstanding history of pioneering hero experiments in the past 30 years, which are widely recognized by the research community.
We are entering a fascinating chapter in the history of optical networks: The staggering infrastructure required to support feature scaling of artificial intelligence (AI) can only be realized by introducing optical transponders as close as possible to the computing nodes within data centers, and of course between data centers. Once again, optical communications, offering power-efficient communications using photons, is indispensable to make future AI fabrics feasible. Here, we are talking about photonics for AI, and not AI for photonics!

Our internship proposal is about developing digital twins for advanced data-center topologies where Millions of computing nodes are interconnected to provide the necessary training horse power for future large language models and agentic AI. We will reuse our knowledge of photonic components and systems to assess, compare, and optimize various topologies suited for future AI platforms. By joining this journey, you will learn about:

* Advanced AI platform topologies, and machine-to-machine communications
* Learn about cost models, energy and bandwidth resource allocation in optical networks
* Solve novel and challenging optimization tasks.
* Contribute to finding solutions to one of the most important problems of today, i.e., optimum scaling strategies of AI platforms.
If significant results are obtained, the student is encouraged and supported by Bell Labs researchers to publish her/his work at major conferences. We have PhD positions normally filled by our former high-performance interns

Candidate Requirements:

* Candidates should be enrolled in a Master of Science/Engineering diploma program in the field of communication theory, computer science, applied physics or any related field (M2/End of year project).
* Math proficiency, good command of advanced calculus. Knowledge of optimization helps a lot.
* Skills in AI and deep learning development packages (Pytorch, Tensorflow, ...), and foundations of algorithms
* Applied MATLAB and/or Python programming.
* Basic knowledge of fiber optics is strongly appreciated, but not mandatory.
* Ability to formulate new problems, working under stress and respecting deadlines.
* Strong written and spoken communications skills.
* Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
