What's the purpose of this role?
The Platform Management Engineer role is responsible for ensuring reliable, secure, and automation-driven operations of the Microsoft 365 / Office 365 platform. This position combines platform engineering, operational discipline, and governance-aligned decision-making to support tenant health, license lifecycle management, and controlled administrative operations.
Your day-to-day
Automation-First Platform Operations
* Design, build, and maintain automation to support core O365 tenant operations
* Ensure automated workflows for tenant maintenance, configuration controls, and health monitoring
* Drive consistency and repeatability of operational tasks through engineering rather than manual execution
License Provisioning & Lifecycle Governance
* Operate and optimize license assignment and removal processes across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem
* Implement lifecycle controls that ensure compliance, cost optimization, and operational continuity
* Manage governance-aware exception handling for specific scenarios (e.g., onboarding continuity, operational emergencies)
Controlled Tenant Administration
* Perform privileged admin actions in a justified, documented, and least-privilege manner
* Support engineering activities in non-production tenants, including testing, validation, and automation development
* Maintain clear rationale and records for escalated privileges to ensure full transparency and governance adherence
Engineering-Driven Platform Support
* Troubleshoot platform-level issues and collaborate across teams to identify root causes
* Convert recurring operational issues into engineering fixes (automation, configuration hardening, control improvements)
* Provide guidance to dependent teams on platform capabilities, limitations, and recommended patterns
Stakeholder Alignment & Governance Compliance
* Communicate platform impacts, risks, and constraints clearly to service managers, architects, and product owners
* Ensure operational decisions align with security policies, governance models, and platform roadmaps
* Maintain alignment with strategic platform direction and operational realities
Documentation, Runbook Quality & Control Hygiene
* Create and maintain technical documentation, operational runbooks, and automated workflow descriptions
* Ensure platform operations do not rely on tribal knowledge by maintaining structured documentation
* Capture rationale for privileged actions and exceptions to maintain auditability and governance integrity
What is needed to succeed in this Role?
Proven O365 / M365 Platform Engineering Experience
* Hands-on experience administering Microsoft 365 / Office 365 services in an enterprise environment
* Strong understanding of tenant-level operations beyond end-user support
* Demonstrated ownership of platform reliability, readiness, security, and governance outcomes
Automation and Engineering-First Operations Mindset
* Experience designing and maintaining automation supporting O365 tenant operations and license lifecycle management
* Strong scripting skills (PowerShell required; bonus for Azure Automation, Graph API, GitHub workflows, etc.)
* Ability to translate operations requirements into repeatable, scalable engineering solutions
Identity, Access, and Governance Expertise
* Understanding of enterprise IAM concepts: RBAC, groups, admin roles, conditional access, approval flows, SoD
* Ability to work within strict privilege boundaries while delivering operational outcomes
* Experience operating in environments with rigorous oversight of administrative actions
Operational Troubleshooting & Escalation Discipline
* Ability to diagnose platform issues using evidence-based methods (telemetry, logs, admin portals, automation output)
* Skilled in collaborating with engineering, identity, networking, or security teams to resolve systemic issues
* Clear communicator capable of breaking down technical constraints for business and non-technical stakeholders
Documentation, Control, and Process Hygiene
* Produce high-quality operational documentation, runbooks, and exception logs
* Ensure all privileged or exception workflows are justified, recorded, and compliant with governance standards
* Maintain transparency around the why behind operational decisions
