Description de l'offre

In future fusion reactors such as ITER, energetic particles (fast ions and fusion-born alpha particles) play a crucial role in plasma heating and in sustaining the fusion reaction. Understanding their confinement and their interactions with plasma instabilities is therefore essential to ensure the performance and reliability of future fusion devices.
The WEST tokamak at CEA provides a unique experimental platform to investigate these phenomena thanks to its full tungsten environment, long-pulse steady-state operation, and high-power Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) system. However, the lack of a dedicated fast-ion diagnostic currently limits the experimental investigation of fast-ion confinement and transport.
The objective of this internship is to contribute to the development of a Fast Ion Loss Detector (FILD) for the WEST tokamak. The student will participate in the design and optimization of the diagnostic using fast-ion orbit simulations and synthetic diagnostic tools. The work will also involve studying the integration of the diagnostic into the highly constrained WEST environment, taking into account thermal loads, electromagnetic compatibility, and long-pulse operational requirements.
Depending on the project's progress, the internship may also include participation in the experimental commissioning of the diagnostic, calibration activities, and the analysis of the first measurements of fast-ion losses. These results will contribute to a better understanding of energetic particle transport mechanisms and provide valuable experimental data for validating numerical models used to prepare future fusion reactors, including ITER.
This internship offers the opportunity to develop expertise in fusion plasma physics, experimental diagnostics, numerical modeling, and data analysis while contributing to a cutting-edge research project supporting the development of fusion energy.

Profil du candidat

The candidate should have a PhD in Physics, with a specialization in fusion plasma physics. Experience during the PhD in fast-ion physics or in the design and development of tokamak diagnostics will be considered a plus. The candidate is expected to be proactive and able to work effectively within a team, interacting closely with a wide range of responsible involved in the design and integration of diagnostics in a complex environment such as a tokamak.
