The Position
Lab Researcher for Functional Mineral Product Development (Internship)
Job Summary
Core Responsibilities
Mineral Characterization: PSD (Sedigraph, Mastersizer 3000), Surface Area (BET), SEM Imaging, LAB Powder Color, TGA
Performance Mapping: Evaluate how different mineral grades interact with building products systems to influence critical performance (Mechanical, Thermal, Acoustic)
Data Synthesis: Compile experimental results into technical reports to provide "Go/No-Go" recommendations for specific raw materials.
Sustainability Research: Assist in identifying alternative or recycled mineral sources to reduce the environmental footprint of upcoming product lines.
Project Description/ Deliverables:
A clear and concise report & presentation should be produced by the intern describing methodology and their findings. A marketing-styled presentation will be produced from these results, drawing benefits of specific mineral grades with regards to building products performances.
Project Learning Objectives:
The intern(s) is expected to develop independent observation/thinking, project management skills, analytical skills, and mineral application experience.
Analytical Expertise: Gain hands-on proficiency with advanced characterization instrumentation, mastering the technical precision
Mineral Processing Fundamentals: Gain insight into industrial processing techniques such as milling, beneficiation, and surface modification, and how they alter mineral behavior.
Experimental Design (DOE): Learn how to structure experiments to test multiple variables (like mineral concentration or temperature) efficiently, rather than one-at-a-time.
Technical Communication/Data Visualization: Master the ability to translate raw data and complex spreadsheets into clear, visual charts that non-technical stakeholders can understand.
Environment
Standing, walking, and operating equipment - up to 70-80% of work time.
Sitting - using computer work station etc. - up to 20-30% of work time.
The work environment is divided between material processing and storage areas (which can be hot and dusty) and air-conditioned laboratory test areas and work cubicles.
