The Role
Welcome to the battery abuse world, this is the engineering to abuse cell and system to see what's the abusive hazards of all our Tesla battery products including large format cells, HV modules/Packs, LV packs and energy products. Abuse validations and analysis is the most charming and challenging part of developing a new product since we are product guards and need to make 0 concession with safety performance of our products which may widely affected millions of people as well as our families and friends, at the same time we enjoy the process of finding new truth. We're proud of our achievement so far but not satisfied with the status and want to move forward faster with your participation.
This position focuses on identifying root causes of abuse test failures in lithium-ion cells to enhance safety. The candidate will implement existiung techniques, develop new techniques and analyze test data for fresh and aged batteries.
Responsibilities
* Oversee cell abuse tests, data processing, and analysis to identify optimal cell design mainly including chemistry, electrical and mechanical design for future products.
* Develop and improve abuse test methods, refine failure analysis, and support thermal modeling.
* Effectively visualize and communicate your analysis process to the global team, clearly expressing your thoughts and plans.
* Work with gloable team, vendors to accelerate the abuse test/analysis progress.
* Collaborate with technicians and support the test setup.
Requirements
MUST
* MS or PhD in materials, electrochemical, or mechanical engineering, with a focus on lithium or related cell backgrounds.
* Proficient in cell fundamentals, reaction mechanisms, and safety failure modes investigation, better to be familiar with electrical, thermal and mechanical fundamentals.
* Working level speaking English.
* Self-driven, able to learn new concepts, propose experiments, and execute independently.
Preferred
* Hands-on lab experience from internships or academic research.
* Preferred coding experience (e.g., MATLAB, Python, or similar tools).
* Knowledge of cell production processes, material parameters, and testing details affecting performance.
* Knowledge of pack or module-level abuse/safety testing and experience in data analysis.
* Enjoys collaborating in cross-functional teams and working with technicians.
* Experience in heat transfer modeling and fundamentals.
* Familiarity with cell safety tests (thermal, electrical, and mechanical).
* Understanding of internal short circuit processes and root causes, such as lithium plating or metal particles.
