bp's Technology organization is the central organization for all software and platform development. We build all the technology that powers bp's businesses, from upstream energy production to downstream energy delivery to our customers. We have a variety of teams depending on your areas of interest, including infrastructure and backend services through to customer-facing web and native applications. We encourage our teams to adapt quickly by using native AWS and Azure services, including serverless, and enable them to pick the best technology for a given problem. This is meant to empower our software and platform engineers while allowing them to learn and develop themselves. You will work on platforms that power bp's global retail and customer ecosystem, supporting millions of transactions and users across mobile, web, and backend systems. These platforms operate at high scale and require strong performance, availability, and security, creating complex and meaningful engineering challenges.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will own the technical direction of key platforms within bp's technology ecosystem, influencing architecture and engineering decisions across multiple teams. This role operates at a cross-team level, shaping scalable solutions that support millions of users and critical business capabilities, while influencing engineering strategy beyond your immediate domain. You will play a key role in balancing immediate delivery needs with long-term platform strategy and system evolution, tackling complex challenges such as scaling high-throughput systems, ensuring reliability under peak demand, and evolving platforms without disrupting live operations.

In this role, you will:
* Set technical direction across teams, influencing architecture and engineering decisions beyond a single team
* Drive alignment across engineering, product, and data teams, influencing without direct authority
* Balance short-term delivery with long-term architectural integrity and platform evolution
* Design and deliver scalable, resilient software systems, producing high-quality design documentation
* Lead end-to-end delivery to production, driving engineering excellence in code quality, testing, and CI/CD
* Design and integrate distributed, event-driven systems and APIs to ensure scalability, reliability, and long-term evolution
* Take ownership of systems end-to-end ("you build it, you run it"), ensuring production stability while raising the engineering bar through mentorship and technical leadership

What You will need to be successful:
* Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience, with the ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and solve complex problems independently and collaboratively
* Strong communicators able to engage, influence, and collaborate with partners from peers to senior leadership, while navigating ambiguity, managing risk, and driving outcomes as a self-starter
* Proven track record of designing and operating production-grade systems at scale, with deep expertise in at least one modern programming language (such as C#, Python, TypeScript, or similar)
* Deep expertise in system design and full SDLC standards (code reviews, CI/CD, source control, testing, operations), building and operating sophisticated, production-grade systems with strong focus on security, monitoring, logging, and reliability
* Proven experience designing, scaling, and solving large-scale distributed systems on AWS or Azure, with strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure components (identity, networking, storage, databases, serverless containers) and production support (on-call environments)
* Advanced database expertise across relational, graph, document, and key-value models, with strong data modeling, database design, and SQL proficiency
