Duties and Responsibilities
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region's economic and social development. Its mission includes design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise, and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. Please visit our website at www.eclac.org for further information The Library supports the institutional mandate by providing access to information resources, knowledge management services and preservation of documentary and digital materials. The continuous growth of the Institutional Digital Repository and the increase in institutional editorial production have generated a need to strengthen analytical, technological and data-driven capacities. The internship is located in the Library and the intern will work under the direct supervision of a professional staff member responsible for information analysis and digital services. Under the supervision of the Library team, the intern will support activities related to data analysis, machine learning, artificial intelligence and information systems, including but not limited to: * Assist in processing, cleaning and structuring data from the Institutional Digital Repository. * Analysis of library workflows to implement automated solutions to improve processes such as OCR conversion to pdf/A2b or different formats, etc * Support data analysis of institutional publications, usage metrics and repository statistics in collaboration with ECLAC Innovation Laboratory. * Contribute to the enrichment of metadata in the Institutional Digital Repository using machine learning, natural language processing and AI-based tools (e.g. keyword extraction, thematic classification, normalization of authors and subjects). * Assist in the development of interactive dashboards presenting indicators related to library services, repository usage and commercial databases. * Support the design and testing of machine learning or AI prototypes applied to bibliographic information, content analysis and recommendation of publications. * Assist in the consumption and testing of APIs to extract, integrate or automate data flows between information systems. * Prepare technical documentation, analytical notes and visual reports for internal use. * Perform other related tasks as required.

Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: * Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor's or equivalent) in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Information Science (with a technological focus), or a related field; or * Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate programme (Master's or Doctorate) in a related field. Required: * Knowledge of Python (e.g. pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn). * Basic knowledge of data analysis and machine learning concepts. * Ability to work with structured datasets (e.g. SQL). * Basic experience consuming REST APIs. * Familiarity with version control tools (e.g. Git). Desirable: * Experience with natural language processing (NLP). * Exposure to generative AI or large language models. * Experience creating dashboards or data visualizations.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Advance Spanish or english is required
