Job Description:

OUR STORY

At STMicroelectronics, we believe in the power of technology to drive innovation and make a positive impact on people, businesses, and society. As a global semiconductor company, our advanced technologies and chips form the hidden foundation of the world we live in today.

When you join ST, you will be part of a global business with more than 115 nationalities, present in 40 countries, and comprising over 50,000 diverse and dedicated creators and makers of technology around the world.

Developing technologies takes more than talent: it takes amazing people who understand collaboration and respect. People with passion and the desire to disrupt the status quo, drive innovation, and unlock their own potential.
Embark on a journey with us, where you can innovate for a future that we want to make smarter and greener, in a responsible and sustainable way. Our technology starts with you.
THE TEAM
The Optical Design Intern will join the Module R&D Design Group, part of the wider Imaging Division, with expertise in optical, mechanical and electrical design. The Group design precision opto-mechanical technologies and assemblies, incorporating ST silicon sensors and optics to produce state-of-the-art high performance optical and photonics products.
Our module products primarily target the consumer market, with applications in mobile phones and portable equipment such as laptops and tablets. The products are designed and developed in cooperation with other ST groups around the world and in partnership with suppliers and subcontractors.
With a strong design emphasis on cost and industrialisation for very high volume, ST modules are developed using state of the art materials, components, and precision automated assembly processes.
Wafer-scale diffractive optics have brought about new possibilities and performance in a myriad of applications. The Module R&D Design Group designs high performance diffractive optical elements, with manufacturing in ST's own cutting-edge 300mm silicon wafer fab.
YOUR ROLE
The primary role is the design of optical components, including VCSEL beam shaping optics and objective lenses for use in ToF modules (NIR and SWIR). It requires highly skilled and proficient use of simulation tools such as Zemax or ST proprietary tools to establish performance, assess sensitivity to manufacturing variations and estimate yield as well as more complex system level simulation using for example LightTools.
You may be required to support Mechanical Designers in tolerance and thermal analysis, and optimise optical designs to accommodate and ease the assembly or module integration. Strong practical skills will be required for characterisation of optical components in dark room environment following laser safety standards and risk assessments.
You will have the opportunity to collaborate with engineers across multi-disciplinary teams from silicon architecture, sensor design, systems engineering and applications
The role offers involvement in the development of optic design methodology, and the development of custom design and simulation tools for both refractive and diffractive lenses. It also offers an opportunity in the development of optical metasurface technology involving design activity, performance analysis, and development of design tools.
YOUR SKILLS & EXPERIENCES
* Holding or progressing to a Graduate Degree in Optics or Physics, ideally at Masters level
* Understanding of design & modelling optical components and systems. including diffractive optics, with an in-depth understanding of physics, radiometry and photonics
* Ideally with some experience in optical simulation software such as LightTools, Zemax or CodeV
* Significant experience and expertise in setting-up and performing optical measurements in dark room environment, with a strong proficiency in Matlab or Python.
ST is proud to be one of the 17 companies certified as a 2025 Global Top Employer and the first and only semiconductor company to achieve this distinction.
