The Position
2026 Summer Intern - Early Clinical Development and Clinical Imaging
Department Summary
Genentech's Research and Early Development (gRED) Early Clinical Development (ECD) organization is responsible for developing and executing early development clinical strategies and plans to provide proof-of-concept data with respect to safety, efficacy, and the utility of biomarkers for gRED new molecular entities.
The Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CS CoE) is a strategic, unified group whose goal is to harness the transformative power of data, technology and computational approaches to assist our scientists in both pRED and gRED to deliver more innovative and transformative medicines for patients worldwide.
Working with both the immunology respiratory team within ECD and the imaging data insights team in the CS CoE, the intern will have the opportunity to work with a cross-functional team to explore and build artificial intelligence (AI) models that use multiple data modalities to predict disease progression in patients with respiratory diseases.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.
The Opportunity
* Curate and preprocess complex clinical datasets to ensure data quality for evaluation and prediction tasks. Implement and compare various statistical and computational approaches to analyze respiratory disease progression.
* Develop novel machine learning models that leverage baseline characteristics to predict disease progression.
* Perform simulation studies and sensitivity analyses to assess model robustness and validity under varying scenarios and assumptions.
* Conduct comprehensive literature reviews on state-of-the-art AI models for analyzing and predicting disease progression and predictive modeling (specifically utilizing imaging data).
* Document analytical findings and collaborate with respiratory working groups to interpret results and assess clinical relevance.
* Contribute to internal presentations and, where applicable, assist in the preparation of abstracts or manuscripts for scientific publication.
* Frequent 1:1 meetings with key stakeholders across the organization.
* Opportunity to work with Clinical Science Team Leaders (CSTL) and clinical imaging scientists in Respiratory to analyze study results.
Program Highlights
* Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
* Program start dates are in May/June 2026.
* A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are
Required Education
You meet one of the following criteria:
* Must have attained a Master's Degree.
* Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
* Must have attained a PhD.
Required Majors: Computer Science or relevant field.
Required Skills
* Good knowledge of programming in Python , frameworks such as PyTorch, computer vision techniques, CNN models, vision transformers, self-supervised models and hands on experience in developing ML/DL models.
* Strong knowledge of multi-modal AI model methodologies and familiarity with vision language foundation models for clinical applications.
* Experience working with medical image analysis in particular 3D images such as HRCT.

* Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
* Impeccable ethics, outstanding attention to detail, excellent project management, teamwork, and interpersonal skills, outstanding communication (verbal and written).
* Experience working in complex multi-disciplinary settings.
Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.
The expected salary for this position based on the primary location of California is $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
