Job Summary: As part of a formal apprenticeship or regional training program, assists Product Design Technicians to learn and develop the skills necessary to obtain a regionally applicable, Certification as an Experienced Technician (e.g. US Department of Labor). Independently performs work to help support area needs during work rotations in other applicable teams.

Key Responsibilities: Develops capability to ensure model and drawing quality. Learns to create and maintain product specifications utilizing Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing. Utilizes Computer Aided Design (CAD) data management tools for configuration control and to maintain security. Acquires knowledge to apply company, industry, national, and international standards. Learns to processes internal engineering work requests. Engages with required functional areas as needed. Attends classes and training programs and makes appropriate progress necessary to build skill and knowledge.

Job Description
The Product Design Technician - Level I supports Cummins Emission Solutions product development by creating and maintaining accurate 3D CAD models and detailed drawings in compliance with Cummins standards. As part of a formal apprenticeship or regional training program, this role assists experienced Product Design Technicians while progressively developing technical capabilities in mechanical design, CAD modeling, configuration management, and engineering standards. The incumbent independently performs assigned tasks during work rotations and contributes to delivering Right First Time (RFT) and On-Time Delivery (OTD) outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Create, modify, and maintain 3D CAD models and 2D drawings for Cummins Emission Solutions components and assemblies (e.g., aftertreatment systems, SCR, DPF, sensors, brackets) using Creo.
* Develop capability to ensure high-quality models and drawings that meet Cummins CAD practices, procedures, and standards.
* Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME standards to support manufacturability, inspection, and functional fit.
* Model complex sheet metal, castings, and welded assemblies typical of emission system products.
* Perform self-checks using CAD checklists to ensure design accuracy and completeness prior to release.
* Manage CAD data in Windchill PLM, including version control, release status, and linkage to Change Notices (CN) and Change Activities (CA).
* Support product configuration and change management activities throughout the product lifecycle.
* Learn and apply company, industry, national, and international engineering standards.
* Process internal engineering work requests and collaborate with cross-functional teams as required.
* Support Right First Time (RFT) and On-Time Delivery (OTD) KPIs by delivering error-free outputs within agreed timelines.
* Participate in required classroom training, on-the-job learning, and apprenticeship activities, making consistent progress toward certification.

Qualifications
Qualifications
* High school diploma, certificate of completion of secondary education, or equivalent experience in a relevant STEM field.
* Must meet the minimum educational requirements to begin a formal, regionally certified apprenticeship or training program.
* Registration in a regionally certified apprenticeship learning or training program is required.
Experience
* Entry-level role; prior exposure to CAD modeling, mechanical drafting, or product design through coursework, internships, vocational training, or apprenticeships is preferred.
* Experience with Creo, Windchill PLM, or emission-related components is an advantage but not mandatory

Competencies:
Mechanical Design Modeling and Analysis - Creates Computer Aided Design models in accordance with Cummins' standards to represent architectural or product level system design concepts, and to enable completion of various system-level computer analyses such as Dimensional Variation Analysis and Finite Element Analysis.

Mechanical Design of Mechanical Systems - Acquires and applies an in-depth understanding of mechanical systems through working knowledge that guides a designer's ability to create innovative and sound design concepts to meet Cummins and customer expectations; designs for requirements of all lifecycle stages by considering the customer requirements in different operating environments to ensure a robust system.

Mechanical Design Specification - Creates complete specifications in the form of solid models, configured engineering bill of materials and detailed drawings that cross-functionally communicate the information required to manufacture and inspect a product per its design intent; considers national, international, industry, and Cummins' standards that accurately and concisely define the part specification.

Product Configuration and Change Management - Establishes a baseline of identified product artifacts to be placed under configuration management; releases, tracks, controls and communicates changes from concept to obsolescence often through work requests; establishes and maintains the integrity of the product artifact baselines.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:
High school diploma, certificate of completion of secondary education or equivalent experience in an appropriate STEM field is required.

Must meet the minimum educational requirements to be ready to start a formal apprenticeship or training program.

Registration in a regionally certified apprenticeship learning or training program required.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
