Simulation Engineering Intern / Master Thesis Student - Wind Turbine Virtual Sensing

Strategic Student Program Spain 2026

Siemens Software - #TransformTheEveryday
Meet the interns by clicking here!
Based: Barcelona, Spain / Working on-location, Part-time (25 hours per week) / 6 months (1st of October 2026 to 31st of March 2027)
Siemens Software is a leading provider of solutions for the design, simulation, and manufacture of products across many different industries. Formula 1 cars, skyscrapers, ships, space exploration vehicles, and many of the objects we see in our daily lives are being conceived and manufactured using our Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software. We offer a role with responsibility, independence, and the possibility to give proactively, by encouraging a teamwork culture with room for individual development.

Start your career with the Strategic Student Program (SSP)!

The SSP is our formal internship program at SIEMENS Software globally. You will be mentored by experts and work directly with customers to create direct business impact and again invaluable professional experience. At Siemens, SSP interns get access to an international student network and community, career development opportunities with professional growth pathways, comprehensive practical training throughout the program, access to the Siemens Learning Hub and other training materials, and the opportunity to work on exciting projects within a global, diverse team.

What you'll be doing as part of the STS team in Spain

Team and context:

At Siemens, we develop advanced simulation and engineering methodologies to support the next generation of renewable energy technologies. Wind turbine structures are instrumented only at a limited number of locations, while many relevant quantities, such as full-field strain, displacement, velocity, acceleration, and external loads, cannot be measured directly.
The Structures & Simulation team works on innovative approaches to reconstruct these quantities through virtual sensing techniques. By combining physics-based models with measurement data and estimation algorithms, we aim to improve monitoring, validation, and predictive capabilities for wind turbine structural systems.

Project description:

This internship and master thesis opportunity focuses on the development of virtual sensing methods for wind turbine structural applications.
The role is particularly suited for students interested in developing their master thesis in collaboration with Siemens Software while gaining hands-on experience within an international engineering environment.
The project includes:
* Developing and implementing virtual sensing methodologies for structural systems
* Working with nonlinear reduced-order models and Kalman-filter-based estimation methods
* Combining simulation models with measurement data for structural state reconstruction
* Validating developed methods using simulated datasets and, where available, experimental measurements
* Contributing to advanced simulation workflows for renewable energy applications
This opportunity offers exposure to cutting-edge research topics combining structural dynamics, simulation, estimation theory, and renewable energy engineering.

What we're looking for

We are seeking master students in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or similar fields.
If you love creative problem-solving in simulation technologies, structural dynamics, research analysis, and numerical coding, and have strong communication skills, we want you!

Preferred qualifications

* Strong background in structural dynamics and multibody dynamics
* Good understanding of numerical methods, especially the finite element method
* Experience with Python and/or MATLAB
* Familiarity with commercial or open-source finite element or multibody simulation tools is an advantage
* Knowledge of state estimation and Kalman filtering is a plus
* Enough proficiency in English language
* Combine analytical thinking with a result-oriented approach, strong team spirit and eager to contribute to common objectives
