Our purpose is simple - to deliver a sustainable future for the world through science and collaboration. If you're looking for a challenge and meaningful role, you're in the right place.

About you and this role

Do you have a passion to deliver innovative solutions for complex scientific problems?

We are looking for you, an ambitious student, currently studying for a Bachelor's or Masters degree, who is interested in an internship opportunity in Analytical Science at our core R&D department within the project: Identification and quantification of micropollutants in wastewater streams.

Dow is offering great career opportunities in a global and international environment.

Responsibilities

Many modern materials involving polymeric constituents, e.g., those with hybrid materials, blends/formulations, sustainable and recycled materials are complex. Liquid chromatography separations, such as gradient liquid chromatography (GLC), and in more complex cases, two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2DLC) play key role in for the detailed characterization to help design and development of new materials. Although number of detection techniques are available to determine chemical composition (e.g., NMR, FTIR), some cannot be used with GLC or 2DLC due to solvent interferences, sensitivity or time-scale mismatch limiting the applicability of separation techniques to solve characterization challenges.

In current project, we aim to first develop fraction collection methodologies for a 2DLC experiments of complex polymer samples of various types with the subsequent analyses by suitable chemically sensitive detection techniques for identification and composition determination. Particularly, Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectroscopy (PyGC-MS) will be explored. The researcher will be able to modify and develop new GLC, 2DLC and PyGC-MS methods for polymer analyses and acquire practical knowledge on the state-of-the-art analytical instrumentations. The project will provide excellent learning opportunity in handling and combining data from different analytical techniques and to interact with diverse R&D team as the results will be required to be communicated via project meetings, reports, and the presentations.
You will work in a diverse and inclusive environment in one of the Dow Analytical Sciences labs. Working in our lab, provides you with an opportunity to directly impact the sustainability footprint and efficiency of many of our production processes and the development of new products for our company.
