Build the data foundation that powers Spendesk
Spendesk is looking for a Data Tech Lead to join our Product, Design & Engineering organization and help shape the future of data at Spendesk.
As Tech Lead of the Core Data squad, you will lead the technical direction and delivery of the team responsible for making Spendesk's data reliable, well-governed, high-quality, and easily accessible to all product squads and business teams.
You will work in a cross-functional squad composed of 1 Data Engineer, 2 Analytics Engineers, 1 Software Engineer, and 1 Data Product Manager, in close partnership with the Head of Data. Your role will be highly hands-on: you will define architecture, raise technical standards, unblock engineers, review code and models, and help the team deliver with more clarity, quality, and pace.
This is a pivotal role for someone who enjoys combining technical excellence, data platform thinking, delivery ownership, and team enablement. You will help rebuild Spendesk's core data foundations at a key moment of transformation, including a full data model redesign, BI tooling migration, AI-powered data access, tracking revamp, and stronger data governance.
About the role
As Tech Lead Core Data, you will be the technical and delivery anchor of the squad.
You will partner closely with the Data Product Manager to shape the squad roadmap, translate strategic data initiatives into executable plans, and ensure the team delivers high-impact outcomes on time. While the PM will remain the main owner of external stakeholder communication and discovery, you will drive the squad's internal operating rhythm: planning, refinements, technical breakdown, delivery follow-up, rituals, and continuous improvement.
You will also work very closely with the Head of Data to align the squad's technical roadmap with Spendesk's broader data strategy.
Over the next 12 months, your main challenges will include:
* Leading the complete redesign of Spendesk's core data model to create a clean, scalable, trusted foundation.
* Supporting the migration to a new BI tool and the rationalization of existing dashboards and reporting assets.
* Improving data quality, observability, documentation, and governance across the platform.
* Helping implement AI-powered tooling to make data easier to access and use across the company.
* Driving the full revamp of tracking and event collection in collaboration with product and engineering squads.
* Improving the squad's delivery practices, including better planning, clearer ownership, and the use of AI to accelerate execution.
* Supporting recruitment, onboarding, and the growth of engineers in the squad.
Our tech environment
Our data platform relies on a modern data stack, including:
* Data platform: dbt Core and dbt Cloud, Snowflake, Omni, Looker, Metabase, Amplitude.
* Ingestion and activation: Airbyte Cloud, Fivetran, Hightouch, Segment, Airflow.
* Observability and collaboration: Synq, GitHub, CI/CD, Notion, Slack.
* Application stack: TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, SQS, Kafka.
* Infrastructure: Terraform, Kubernetes, Lambdas, Step Functions, AWS, GitHub Actions.
You do not need to be an expert in every tool, but you should be comfortable making architectural decisions in this type of environment and guiding engineers who build across both software and data systems.
Key responsibilities
Technical leadership and architecture
You will define and drive the technical direction of the Core Data squad. This includes shaping the architecture of our data platform, from ingestion and tracking to transformation, semantic modeling, BI, and data exposure.
You will lead design discussions for new pipelines, models, services, tracking systems, and integrations. You will ensure that the squad makes pragmatic, scalable, and cost-effective technical decisions, with clear trade-offs between speed, reliability, governance, security, and long-term maintainability.
You will remain close to implementation: writing or reviewing code, dbt models, infrastructure changes, technical designs, and helping debug complex issues when needed. You will be expected to raise the quality bar across software engineering, data engineering, and analytics engineering practices.
Core data foundation, quality, and governance
You will help rebuild Spendesk's core data model into a clean, consistent, and trusted foundation for analytics, product insights, operational reporting, and AI use cases.
You will drive standards around data modeling, naming conventions, ownership, contracts, documentation, and testing. You will help ensure critical datasets have clear SLAs or SLOs, proper observability, and well-defined incident or escalation processes where needed.
You will work closely with Analytics Engineers, the Data Engineer, the Software Engineer, and domain teams to reduce duplication, prevent metric fragmentation, and make shared data assets easier to discover, understand, and reuse.
Squad delivery and execution
You will co-own the squad roadmap with the Data Product Manager and turn strategic initiatives into clear delivery plans. You will help break down complex technical topics into milestones, epics, and actionable tickets, while ensuring scope, risks, dependencies, and deadlines are well understood.
You will be responsible for improving the squad's delivery rhythm. This includes facilitating or co-facilitating planning, refinements, technical reviews, delivery follow-up, retrospectives, and internal squad communication.
You will also help the team balance long-term foundational work with business-as-usual needs, urgent fixes, migrations, and stakeholder requests. Your role will be to make trade-offs explicit and ensure the squad remains focused on outcomes rather than just output.
Engineering enablement and team growth
You will mentor and support engineers across the squad, helping them grow technically and increase their impact. You will provide regular guidance through pair programming, design reviews, code reviews, feedback, and coaching.
You will help set high standards while fostering a collaborative, low-ego, and psychologically safe team environment. Depending on the squad setup, you may also support some people-related or administrative responsibilities, such as onboarding, performance input, development plans, or recruitment support.
You will play an active role in hiring and onboarding new team members, especially as the squad continues to scale.
Cross-functional collaboration
You will work hand-in-hand with the Data Product Manager and Head of Data, and collaborate closely with product squads, engineering leaders, finance, RevOps, and other business teams consuming or contributing to Spendesk's data products.
You will help translate business and product needs into robust technical solutions, while also making technical constraints and risks understandable to non-technical stakeholders.
Internally, you will act as the main technical reference for the squad. Externally, you will support the PM in communicating roadmap decisions, dependencies, risks, and delivery progress when technical clarity is needed.
What we're looking for
Experience and background
You have significant experience in software engineering, data engineering, analytics engineering, or data platform engineering, with a strong track record of delivering complex technical projects in production.
You have already operated as a Tech Lead, Staff Engineer, Senior Engineer with strong leadership responsibilities, or Engineering Team Lead. You are comfortable guiding engineers, making architecture decisions, and creating alignment across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
You have experience working closely with Product Managers or Data Product Managers, and you understand how to turn ambiguous business goals into pragmatic technical plans.
Experience in B2B SaaS, fintech, or regulated environments is a plus, but not required.
Technical skills
You bring strong technical judgment and hands-on experience in at least part of the following areas:
* Modern data platforms, including warehouses, transformation layers, BI, semantic layers, and observability.
* Data modeling, data quality, governance, documentation, and metric consistency.
* Backend or platform engineering, ideally with TypeScript, Node.js, event-driven systems, APIs, or cloud infrastructure.
* dbt, Snowflake, SQL, CI/CD, GitHub workflows, testing, and production ownership.
* Tracking systems, event collection, or data contracts.
* AI-enabled tooling or a strong interest in using AI to improve data access and engineering delivery.
You do not need to be equally deep in backend, data engineering, and analytics engineering, but you should be able to reason across these domains, ask the right questions, and guide specialists toward coherent technical decisions.
Leadership and ways of working
You are hands-on, pragmatic, and outcome-driven. You care about clean architecture and strong engineering standards, but you know how to sequence work and avoid over-engineering.
You are a strong communicator who can explain technical topics clearly to engineers, product stakeholders, and business teams. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity, making trade-offs, and creating clarity for others.
You enjoy mentoring engineers and helping teams improve the way they work. You lead by example, with curiosity, kindness, ownership, and a bias for action.
You are fluent in written and spoken English, our business language.
