Descrizione del lavoro:

Internship Topic:

Design and structural sizing of secondary steelwork elements for the CI BOP of the EPR Sizewell C (UK) - manual and numerical calculations, preliminary sizing of steel structures, verification of anchor plates, 3D modelling, preparation of the bill of quantities, and analysis of the impact of design standards on results.

Context:

As part of the Sizewell C nuclear project, the design phase of secondary steel structures must be rigorous and compliant with British and international standards (ETC-C, etc.). This internship includes the preliminary sizing of load-bearing elements, with a particular focus on anchor plates. A dual approach, combining manual calculations and validation using specialized numerical tools (such as Robot Structural Analysis and Verifplatine), ensures the reliability, safety, and optimization of the proposed solutions.

Internship Objectives:

* Carry out preliminary manual calculations of secondary steelwork elements, including anchor plates, to understand and verify design principles.
* Use numerical tools such as Robot Structural Analysis for global structural calculations and Verifplatine for detailed anchor verification.
* Perform comparative calculations of anchorages with and without the contribution of concrete reinforcement.
* Compare the calculation results for steel structures and anchorages across different design standards (EC3 vs ETC-C vs BS vs RCC-CW).
* Integrate validated results into a 3D model (e.g., Navisworks) during the design phase.
* Extract an accurate bill of quantities consistent with the validated design.
* Propose improvements or optimizations based on cross-analysis of manual and numerical calculation results.

Technical Challenges:

* Quality assurance and traceability of calculations in a demanding nuclear environment.
* Mastery of both traditional methods and modern tools to ensure robustness and compliance.
* Coordination between design office, engineering, and fabrication through an integrated 3D model.

Skills Developed:

* Manual structural calculations and in-depth understanding of design principles.
* Proficiency in advanced numerical tools (Robot Structural Analysis, Verifplatine).
* Parametric 3D modelling and integration of technical data.
* Critical analysis and design optimization.

Expected Deliverables:

* Manual calculation notes and analysis reports.
* Integrated 3D models with validated elements.
* Extracted and validated bills of quantities.
* Comparative summary between manual calculations and numerical tools, with recommendations.

Candidate Profile:

* Final-year Civil engineering student or Master's student specialized in civil engineering / structural design.
* Strong knowledge of manual structural calculations (static and dynamic).
* Initial experience or practical knowledge of Robot Structural Analysis is desirable.
* Knowledge of 3D modelling tools (Tekla Structures, Autodesk Advance Steel, or similar) is an asset.
* Rigorous, analytical mindset and strong teamwork skills in a demanding regulatory environment.

Internship Duration:

4 to 5 months between April 2026 and September 2026
