Job Description:
As a member of the R&D Enzymes team in Andenne, the VIE will contribute to the development, optimization, and scale-up of downstream processing technologies for enzymes. The role focuses on separation, concentration, clarification, stabilization, and formulation of enzyme solutions, bridging lab-scale development and industrial implementation. The VIE will work closely with R&D, Process Development, Quality, Operations, and external partners to ensure robust, scalable, and cost-efficient downstream processes delivering consistent enzyme performance. Key Accountabilities Downstream Process Development * Support and lead R&D projects related to enzyme downstream processing, including filtration, membrane technologies (microfiltration, ultrafiltration, diafiltration), concentration, clarification and microbial removal steps. * Design, execute, and analyze laboratory and pilot-scale trials for enzyme processing and formulation. * Contribute to the development and optimization of enzyme stabilization and formulation strategies (liquid formulations, concentrates, intermediates, or dried formats in collaboration with other teams). * Evaluate process robustness, yield, enzyme activity recovery, and scalability. Characterization & Data Analysis * Perform liquid and process stream characterization (activity, protein content, impurities, viscosity, stability, shelf life). * Build fundamental understanding of the links between upstream material characteristics, downstream processing parameters, and final enzyme recovery. * Analyze experimental data and translate results into clear technical recommendations. Scale-up & Industrial Support * Support scale-up activities from lab to pilot and industrial scale in close collaboration with Operations and Process Improvement teams. * Participate in industrial trials, tech-transfer to operation and contribute to troubleshooting and continuous improvement of existing downstream processes. * Quality, Safety & Regulatory Compliance: comply with HACCP and food safety regulations and take part in deviation investigations. Collaboration & Innovation * Coordinate and manage interactions with internal stakeholders (R&D, Quality, Purchasing, Operations). * Contribute to collaborations with external partners and suppliers (membrane manufacturers, equipment suppliers, analytical partners, research institutes). * Monitor and review scientific literature, patents, and emerging technologies related to enzyme downstream processing. Documentation & Knowledge Sharing * Document processes, experimental results, and conclusions in a structured and traceable way. * Contribute to internal knowledge building through reports, technical notes, and presentations. * Support the development of training materials and knowledge transfer to operations teams when relevant
Candidate Requirements:
Education * Master's degree in Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Bio-engineering, Chemical Engineering, Food Technology, or (Bio)Chemistry. * A strong focus or demonstrated interest in downstream processing, separation technologies, or formulation is required. Experience * 0-2 years of experience (or recent graduate) in biotechnology, enzyme technology, fermentation/downstream processing, or related fields. * Experience or academic exposure to filtration, membrane processes and spray-drying is a strong asset. Significant internships in DSP process labs or food/biotech are a strong plus. Technical Skills * Knowledge or strong interest in: o Enzyme processing and stabilization o Filtration and membrane technologies o Liquid characterization and analytical techniques o Process development and scale-up principles o Spray-drying & formulation * Affinity for experimental work and data-driven problem solving. Soft Skills * Hands-on, curious, and eager to learn. * Structured and autonomous in project execution, with a proactive mindset. * Strong communication skills, able to interact with multidisciplinary teams. * Fluent in written and spoken English; French is a plus. * Team player with a pragmatic, down-to-earth attitude
