Transform the everyday with us!
In this role you will work onsite in Princeton, NJ.
Our Princeton facility is recognized for providing a stimulating environment for highly talented and self-motivated students. You will have the opportunity to test your knowledge in a challenging problem-solving environment. You will be encouraged to think out of the box, innovate and find solutions to real-life problems.
Are you passionate about making industrial AI safe, trustworthy, and ready for the factory floor? Do you want to explore how AI models can be securely integrated with real-time control systems, across industries like pharma, chemicals, food & beverage, and energy? Here's the right internship opportunity for you!
Join our research group, Automation Engineering Software, located in Princeton, NJ, for a 3-6-month internship, and contribute to research on safe AI integration with industrial control systems, including modular automation, industrial edge computing, and AI governance frameworks. Our close contact with different business units in Siemens provides the opportunity to contribute to and gain experience in real industrial challenges. During this internship, you will experience the excitement and challenges of industrial research at the intersection of AI, process control, and industrial standards.
An internship with Siemens Technology is a great opportunity for students to gain real-world experience in a diverse work environment.
Key responsibilities:
* Contribute to prototyping and benchmarking industrial communication middleware (e.g., pub/sub protocols, OPC UA bridges, message brokers) for low-latency AI-to-control-system integration.
* Develop test harnesses and performance benchmarks for evaluating AI model inference latency and communication round-trip times in simulated industrial environments.
* Build observability dashboards and monitoring infrastructure for tracking system health, message latency, and AI model behavior in real time.
* Explore integration patterns for Unified Namespace (UNS) architectures and industrial data modeling standards.
* Analyze compliance gaps against industrial automation standards (MTP/IEC 63280, IEC 62443, ISA-88/95) and document findings. * Collaborate with researchers and engineers on end-to-end validation scenarios, documentation, and regulatory compliance analysis (e.g., EU AI Act).
Basic Qualifications:
* An MS or PhD student pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or similar from an accredited university.
* Strong programming proficiency in Python, including familiarity with at least one systems language (Rust, C++, Go).
* Foundational understanding of distributed systems concepts (pub/sub messaging, state machines, REST APIs).
* Experience with data analysis, visualization, and scientific computing (NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib).
* Ability to work in Linux environments with Docker and Git.
* Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
* Legally authorized to work in the United States for the duration on the internship.
Preferred Qualification:
* Practical experience with industrial communication protocols (OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus) or edge computing platforms.
* Familiarity with process simulation, SCADA, or industrial control system environments.
* Knowledge of ML model serving frameworks (ONNX Runtime, TensorFlow Serving, or similar).
* Experience with observability tools (Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry).
* Understanding of industrial standards (ISA-88, ISA-95, IEC 62443, MTP/IEC 63280).
* Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing (pytest, GitHub Actions).
* Flexibility and adaptability to work in an interdisciplinary team spanning software, process engineering, and research.
May consider sponsorship of J-1 visa students (6-12 months), dependent upon program requirements.
