Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI's goals are: a) to advance understanding of crime-related problems; b) to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; c) to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; d) to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance. See more information on www.unicri.org. This position is located within UNICRI's Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in the Hague, The Netherlands. The internship is for an initial period of 2 months, which can be extended up to a total period of 6 months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work 5 days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the programme, project or unit to which they are assigned. Applicants for this internship position are expected to work from the premises in The Hague, The Netherlands. UNICRI personnel are allowed, upon approval by the supervisor, to request up to three days of telecommuting from the Duty Station per week. Under the supervision of the Head of the Centre, the intern will assist in the implementation of the activities of UNICRI's Centre for AI and Robotics. In particular, the intern will contribute to projects aimed at enhancing the understanding of various stakeholders regarding the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the criminal justice system, including its challenges, opportunities, and pathways for responsible innovation. Examples of duties to be performed by the intern may include: - Conduct research and provide analytical support on topics related to artificial intelligence, criminal justice, and the broader work of the Centre. - Monitor local, regional, and international news and policy developments relevant to the Centre's activities. - Identify, map, and maintain databases of key stakeholders and relevant professional communities. - Assist in drafting, preparing and reviewing project documentation, concept notes, briefing materials, reports, talking points, presentations etc. - Support the organization of meetings, workshops, training and other events, including agenda preparation, note-taking, and drafting follow-up reports. - Attend meetings with partners and stakeholders and prepare action points and summaries. - Assist in communications and visibility related to the Centre's activities. - Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants who meet the following requirements are preferred: - Have studied law, criminology, sociology, philosophy/applied ethics, international relations or a related field. - Have demonstrated a keen interest in law enforcement, criminal justice, AI governance or AI ethics. - Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. - Have demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs and a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
