Department:
Process and Equipment Engineering
Project Title:
Workstation Defects Improvement Evaluation
Project Description:
This internship project focuses on evaluating material solutions and process conditions to reduce manufacturing defects and improve process robustness within dry etch operations. The project centres on studying synthetic quartz rings and periodic conditioning techniques to understand their impact on defect performance and process stability. Through structured analysis and guided learning, the intern will develop foundational knowledge of dry etch process behaviour, tool architecture, and material interactions relevant to semiconductor manufacturing.
Project Scope:
The objective is to provide the intern with hands-on learning exposure to dry etch process fundamentals while developing analytical thinking, engineering evaluation skills, and an understanding of process qualification methodologies. The scope can include the following:
* Study dry etch process principles with emphasis on dielectric etching behaviour
* Evaluate synthetic quartz rings and conditioning approaches through structured engineering analysis
* Review process data to understand defect trends and sources of variation
* Develop qualification plans and timelines for material and process evaluations
* Participate in structured discussions with engineers to understand process characterisation strategies, statistical analysis, and experimental design concepts
Learning Opportunities:
* Fundamentals of dry etch processes and equipment architecture
* Process qualification and engineering evaluation techniques
* Statistical thinking and data-based decision making
* Multi-functional engineering collaboration and technical communication
Deliverable:
* Technical summary of dry etch process fundamentals and tool overview
* Documented evaluation results for synthetic quartz rings and conditioning approaches
* Structured report outlining findings, observations, and engineering recommendations
* Final presentation summarising learning outcomes and project impact
Impact of Project:
The project contributes to improved understanding of defect reduction strategies and process capability enhancement while building early-career engineering competencies.
Skillset Required:
* Curiosity and interest in semiconductor manufacturing and process engineering
* Fundamental engineering knowledge gained through academic coursework
* Logical thinking and ability to interpret technical data
* Willingness to learn and engage in structured project work
Course of Interest:
This project is suitable for students currently pursuing a degree in AN engineering discipline such as Electrical, Electronic, Chemical, Materials, Mechanical, or other related engineering fields.
Duration Period:
Minimum 5 months (full-time, semester-long internship)
