Duties and Responsibilities
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region's economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise, and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. This internship is located in the Secretariat of the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean (the Escazú Agreement) at the Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division (SDHS) of ECLAC. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an "as-needed" basis. The intern will work under the overall supervision of the Chief of the Division and the direct supervision of the Legal Officer. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and the internship period. Duties may include: - Undertake legal and policy research related to the Escazú Agreement; - Assist and take notes in different meetings and activities; - Prepare draft documents, minutes and reports and English/Spanish translations thereof; - Prepare draft summaries and English/Spanish translations of documents, e-mails, forms and other inputs sent to the Secretariat and bodies of the Agreement; - Provide general and logistical support during meetings and activities; and - Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation. For this internship, studies in the areas of Law, Political Science, Environment, Sustainable Development, Public Administration, Translation, Data Management and other related areas is desirable. Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in Spanish and knowledge of English are required. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
