OUR STORY

At STMicroelectronics, we believe in the power of technology to drive innovation and make a positive impact on people, businesses, and society. As a global semiconductor company, our advanced technologies and chips form the hidden foundation of the world we live in today.

When you join ST, you will be part of a global business with more than 115 nationalities, present in 40 countries, and comprising over 50,000 diverse and dedicated creators and makers of technology around the world.

Developing technologies takes more than talent: it takes amazing people who understand collaboration and respect. People with passion and the desire to disrupt the status quo, drive innovation, and unlock their own potential.
Embark on a journey with us, where you can innovate for a future that we want to make smarter and greener, in a responsible and sustainable way. Our technology starts with you.
The Team
STMicroelectronics Imaging develops CMOS imaging and light sensing solutions for a wide range of markets. Unique CMOS image sensors and light detection sensors are developed separately or in conjunction with companion ASICs, resulting in a complete imaging and sensing solution recognised as world leading in performance. This market is a growth area within semiconductors.

The EOCS (Electro-Optical Characterization and Simulation) team is a multi-site, international team within the Technology for Optical Sensors Group. The team works closely with Design, Technology Research and Development, Engineering and Marketing teams in the definition and development of image sensor technologies, camera systems and light sensing and ranging technologies. The summer project placement will be part of the EOCS team based in Edinburgh.

The group expertise lies in the areas of sensor technology, optical system specification and electro-optical performance assessment. One vital part of this function is to provide device and technology characterization and simulation data to support the decision making required to help direct the technology development.
More recently, the need to characterize these sensing solutions under different conditions - such as temperature versus light incident angles - has created an opportunity to study and develop more robust characterization methodologies. One of these involves the integration of a robotic arm within our laboratorial environment. This work will enable the extraction of new key metrics necessary for assessing CMOS sensor performance, automate current characterization work, and ultimately allow deployment across different characterization and validation teams at ST sites. Additionally, it could also be used to pick-and-place CMOS samples allowing the speed-up of metrics capture as, potentially, it could run automatically or minimal user input 24/7.

The Role
The successful applicant will be involved in assessing the robotic arm performance in terms of repeatability and precision. Once complete, the student will have the opportunity to assemble the unit and help script the control algorithm. The final stage will involve deploying the system on one of the lab benches for initial characterization work and qualification.
Description of work:
* Training on all relevant internal characterization methodologies, analysis/simulation techniques, and literature review of existing characterization methods for the relevant figures of merit.
* Scripting and assessment of the robotic arm performance.
* Extensive characterization work to identify limitations and potential improvements on the bench.
* Collection of characterization data to qualify the solution.

This project will give the student the opportunity to apply their knowledge and develop/ improve their engineering skills as the project will require understanding of mechanics, software development and laboratorial work. All work will be done using our standard tools and with the support of senior engineers.
Key Skills & Experience:
* Working knowledge of semiconductor devices, silicon products and device measurement
* Demonstrable skills in programming, either directly in a high-level language or through a scripting language medium.
* Demonstrable experience in software instrument interfacing and control.
* Demonstrable understanding of designed experiment construction and experimental method.
* Clear communication skills and proven ability to work in a multi-disciplined environment.
* Skilled in collating and reporting data and checking for consistency and accuracy.
* Experienced in use of MS Office package.
Additional Skills & Experience:
* Familiar with the specification, set up and alignment of free space optics.
* Understanding of the physics of light and light interaction with matter.
* Understanding of and working knowledge of optics and camera systems.
* Matlab usage and programming experience.
* Python programming experience.
* Post graduate qualification in related field.
* Software development skills and understanding of software design methodologies.
* Interest in and understanding of photography.
* Understanding of calibration, accuracy, repeatability and measurement traceability.
* Electronics measurement system design.
