Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environment sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The UNEP New York Office represents the organization at the UN Headquarters and within North America. It fosters strategic partnerships, information exchange, and cooperation with Member States, the UN Secretariat, and UN entities and major groups, and stakeholders throughout the region. It facilitates information exchange with UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi on processes relevant to UNEP's mandate. It also works to ensure that the environmental dimension is integrated into global discussions at UN Headquarters while linking key environmental outcomes with intergovernmental and interagency processes. The internship is for six months, and the incumbent will work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, on a full-time basis at the UNEP New York Office. Remote work is possible during the execution of the contract. Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Public Information Officer, the intern will work five days per week and undertake a range of assignments to engage with stakeholders to raise environmental awareness and promote change in policy and practice. This will include the following duties: * Generate content ideas and social media strategies to promote existing and new UNEP digital platforms; * Contribute to the implementation of global campaign activities and advocacy initiatives; * Assist in the planning and coordination of meetings and key events such as UN International Days, and the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA); * Assist in producing compelling graphics and multimedia content including but not limited to infographics, flyers, posters, banners and videos; * Assist with outreach to media including press briefings and conferences; * Monitor and update the external web site and internal intranet presence; * Assist in the timely delivery of flagship information products to key stakeholders and the media; * Research and prepare clear and compelling reports, stories, presentations and other communications materials in support of organizational priorities; * Support outreach to partners, governments, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and youth; * Attend and report back on relevant meetings, conferences, and other events, as requested; * Update and maintain contact database for stakeholders and partners, including media; * Perform any other communications-related duties, as required. * Support in coordination activities within the New York Office, including events, internal and external meetings, minutes, and presentations. * Support in Office's coordination tasks, such as mailing lists; maintenance of databases and shared drives; filing and dispatching of information to staff.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a Master's degree programme in Environmental Sciences, Communications, or International Relations; b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a Bachelor's degree programme in Environmental Sciences, Communications, or International Relations; OR c. Have graduated with a university degree in Environmental Sciences, Communications, or International Relations. Applicants to the United Nations Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience; however, relevant experience is highly desirable. Proficiency in IT applications and design tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Canva is considered an asset. A certified copy of degree certificate (if you have already graduated).
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
