You can learn Russian best by travelling around and getting into contact with locals, they are quite open and warm especially if you come from Germany. For doing so, basic skills in Russian are obligatory.

Personal comments
buy things in Russian-looking stores. Anything where a visa/mastercard sign is on the door should be avoided, as well as foreigner attractions.you get the russian prices for museums etc. only with a russian student ID, foreign students ID's are taken into account, but it's still expensive.

Important factors in my choice

Personal recommendation
It's a good one, subscribe to the courses "russian as a foreign language" - they have excellent teachers. and get used to Russian Teaching methods. There are more authority-focused.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
student housing was for foreigners only, a family connection would have been better for not talking English or French as well, but Russian only

Personal comments
The dormitory was fine. It is managed by the International Office of the RSUH and therefore the housing contract should be fixed in detail in advance. Otherwise it might be possible that any implicit contract will be changed for unknown reason, and one might be confronted with a roommate, even though you have been promised a single room. After midnight you will have to ring for being atmitted. You have to get an allowance to accomodate friends over night.
