Our personal favorite night spot was the Lions Fountain, and then for late night we would go to Lochness over by Santa Croce. Our night always began at JJ's which was a small bar by the Duomo where everyone would meet. For lunch we loved Il Massacio, a panini place right by our school.

Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Although I absolutely loved living with a family, I would want the experience of living on my own. After graduation I would want the chance to explore Florence and live more independently.

The woman I lived with was absolutely amazing. Her food was delicious and she took care of us like we were her own children. She did our laundry every day and provided us with anything we needed any time of day. It was a wonderful experience. The only complaint I had was the distance from the apartment to the center of the city. Buses did not run all night and cabs were pricey.

I loved learning the Italian language and found it necessary because the woman I lived with did not speak or understand english. I wish I continued my Italian studies because I hope to be fluent one day. The Italians are very patient people and would go out of there way to understand and help you with communication as well.

Personal spending habits
I travelled more than I did at home and I was also exposed to new things that I wanted to try. I spent a lot of money on travelling which also included hotels, food, and gifts.

When you travel stay in hostels, or crowd as many people as possible into one or two hotel rooms. I also bought the Eurorail which I found helpful in travelling. Also, try to always have a bus pass on you because if you get caught without one it is a heavy fine. When possible, walk everywhere because the scenery is beautiful and its cheaper than taking a cab or bus.

I wish I had known...
I wish I would have known how hard it would be to readjust to living in the US when I got home. Other than that I loved everything about Italy and learning about the culture.

Personal recommendation
Syracuse University is great because it is a small school and offers very personal attention to its students. They have a large variety of trips to take their students on and set up a very cozy student center for everyone to meet, study, and talk. If you ever had a problem you knew you could talk to someone at the school and they would help you take care of it. I would highly recommend anyone to this program.

Final comments
My best advice is to always be open to trying new things. When I was abroad I did things that I never would have done in the US and it made my experience so much better. You do have to be careful because crime still occurs overseas (I got my bag stolen in the last 2 weeks of my stay). Do as much as possible in the time you are there because its an experience you can never fully get back. The food is delicious, the people are friendly and the country is beautiful. Just enjoy!

Academic
Course recommendations
The courses were interesting but I would have liked to have more interaction and lecturing from local Italians, especially in my art history and history courses.

I thought the schedules were convenient and the classes were interesting. Courses were pretty much what I expected to have, although I was surprised to have an attendance policy in all classes.
