I wish I had known...
No, I got plenty of information before, and the guys from International Office and Social Office were brilliant (watch out for that Information Week!).

I recommend it strongly, I loved it. But I'm not everybody. Tromsø is located at 70 degrees north, a place with fantastic nature, close to wilderness and so on. "Big city people" who are not into that, might have problems to cope with this. If not you will enjoy the year of your life!

it's a very good university and it gives you many opportunity, in your studies and for your personal experince. even geographically it's extreme and this is a challenging experience but unique and difficult to understand if you don't try. I was impressed by teachers and by their disponibility, the atmospheer is relaxed but very professional at the same time. if i have the possibility i will try to go back for some specializations.

the palce is fantastic, the nature also. the university and the city are lovely. it's pretty far from the core of Europe but it's easy to rich by plane, even if it's a little bit expensive, but it worth. if you can be there and you have the possibility try to find an accomodation close to the university campus and not too far from the city centre. about social life, the best is to partecipate to the largest number of activities (all kind of) and to do the card for sport activities, if you like to ski try to carry your own equipment. can be very cold but it's a unique experincethe the long arctic winter. Tromso it's a lively city and there are thousands things to do, and the night life it's impressive.

It has a very friendly international atmosphere. This may be further enhanced if they require international students to learn and pass the local language as part of their programmes

Can be extremely cold, windy, lots of snow and dark in the long winter months in Tromsø. The weather is not bad per se, your dressing may however be bad!

Academic
Course recommendations
I can recommend the course "Arctic Norway" (in English), which is a brilliant mixture of (Northern) Norwegian history, social anthropology and politics. I even got an idea about my thesis there. There was nothing missing at that course. The course "Norwegian for foreigners" is recommended for people who want to learn more about the language, not to learn the language. For those the evening courses are highly recommended.

Not really, I think the system here is more efficient as the one I'm used to from home. Had nothing to complain about.

well, about Tromso it's not easy to say my favorite night spot, because all the centre of the city was full of fantastic places, every night there were many places for having fun and sometimes was hard to decide where to go. there are places for listening live music, to play all kind of games and to do all kind of activities, dancing, eating drinking, etc.. i was impressedfirst period, anyway one of the best for student in that period was Drive, Stroket, Caos, Blorock, mayeryet, sofaputa, and many others.

Well, everybody can find something! My favorite places the Studenthouse DRIV (cheap food and many different "events"), Cafe Paletten (to play chess, drink Cafe au Lait and watch football on big screen), Cafe Aunegarden (to drink cafe and eat cake), the Hurtigruten ships (they stay in Tromsø everyday between 14:30 and 18:00, and you can drink and eat there, breathtaking). Alfheim Stadium (top football at 70 degrees North) ... There are many more places to mention, but I don't have the time.
