Job Description
Avient Protective Materials (APM) is looking for a highly motivated Master's student to conduct a strategic research project focused on the European naval market. APM develops Dyneema®, the world's strongest fiber, used in advanced ballistic and lightweight protective solutions. As naval programs increasingly demand improved survivability, weight reduction, and sustainability, APM aims to assess where Dyneema® can create value in future maritime defense platforms
YOUR CHALLENGE
Avient Protective Materials (APM) is exploring opportunities to expand its advanced material solutions within the global naval sector with an emphasis on European shipbuilders (OEM's). To support this ambition, we are seeking an intern to conduct a focused market study that evaluates the potential for APM's high-performance protective materials in naval platforms and related maritime defense programs.
The study will map the structure and dynamics of the naval market, with particular attention to key shipbuilders and OEMs, their procurement strategies, and the material technologies currently used in hulls, superstructures, armor systems, and onboard protective applications. The intern will assess the relevance of APM's portfolio-Dyneema®, an extremely lightweight composite used for ballistic protection-against emerging naval requirements including survivability, weight reduction, corrosion resistance, and sustainability.
A central component of the assignment is identifying major naval programs across surface vessels, submarines, and auxiliary fleets. This includes mapping active and upcoming programs in mainly Europe and analyzing their timelines, decision-makers, and material specifications. The intern will also evaluate competitive offerings and benchmark APM's potential differentiators/challenges.
The outcome will be a clear, data-driven view of whether meaningful opportunities exist for APM in the naval domain, which OEMs and programs should be prioritized, and what strategic steps could position APM as a valued material partner in future naval platforms.
