Expected duration

Duties and Responsibilities
The ESCAP Statistics Division is guided by the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics and the Principles Governing International Statistical Activities and by the work programme and the membership of ESCAP. Our mandates arise from a number of General Assembly, ECOSOC and ESCAP resolutions. The core areas of the Division's work include implementing programmes for capacity building in statistics; collecting and analysing data on the region; and publishing statistical and analytical publications. We work closely with the ESCAP Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific and organizations that are part of national statistics systems in the region (national statistical offices are our main counterparts); the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs; other United Nations entities; and with many regional and international organizations. On statistics related to hazardous events and disasters, the ESCAP Statistics Division contributes to the advancement of the Global Disaster-Related Statistics Framework (G-DRSF) in its role as co-chair of the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Disaster-related Statistics (IAEG-DRS). The G-DRSF was endorsed by the United Nations Statistical Commission at its fifty-seventh session in March 2026 as the global statistical framework underpinning the production of disaster-related statistics. The Commission further encouraged countries to implement the Framework and called upon the IAEG-DRS to operationalize it through the development of guidance, methodological tools, and capacity-building activities. In this context, the National Statistical Office of Thailand (NSO) has expressed interest in implementing the G-DRSF and enhancing Power BI-based visualization of disaster-related statistics. The Statistics Internship on disaster-related statistics offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in statistical capacity-building initiatives, and contributing to research and the development of implementation guidance for the G-DRSF. The internship is for at least three months, with an opportunity for an extension of up to six months, depending on the needs of the Division and the availability of the candidate. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Statistics Division. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background as well as the internship period. The ideal candidate is passionate about finding new ways to solve problems and is eager to learn new skills. Duties may include but are not limited to the following: * Enhancing Power BI-based visualizations of disaster-related statistics based on specific needs identified by the Thai NSO; * Supporting the implementation of the G-DRSF in the national context of Thailand; * Conducting research and contributing to the drafting of selected guidance notes to support G-DRSF implementation; * Exploring fundraising opportunities to advance the operationalization of the G-DRSF, including drafting concept notes and project proposals; * Performing other related work as required.
