The Opportunity

Build the Future With Us - Start your career protecting aquatic ecosystems across Western and Northern Canada.
As a Junior Aquatic Biologist, you'll join WSP's Aquatic Sciences team, supporting field-based environmental programs across Western Canada and the Northern Territories. This role is an excellent opportunity to launch a career in environmental consulting while gaining hands-on experience in diverse aquatic environments.
Working alongside experienced biologists and project managers, you'll contribute to environmental monitoring and assessment programs that support infrastructure, energy, mining, and industrial projects. You'll build strong technical, field, and professional skills in a collaborative, mentorship-driven environment, with clear pathways for growth into intermediate, senior, and project leadership roles.
This position is based in Calgary, Edmonton or Saskatoon, with regular field travel.

Your Impact

* Participate in aquatic field programs supporting rail, power, mining, oil and gas, infrastructure, and pipeline projects.
* Assist with fish and fish habitat assessments, aquatic baseline studies, fish health programs, water quality monitoring, and environmental monitoring initiatives.
* Execute fieldwork in accordance with approved study designs, sampling protocols, regulatory requirements, and health and safety plans.
* Collect, record, and manage accurate field data, notes, and samples in a variety of environmental conditions.
* Support data organization, interpretation, and technical deliverables such as reports and permitting documentation.
* Work independently and within multidisciplinary field teams under the guidance of intermediate and senior staff.
* Interact professionally with clients, contractors, Indigenous partners, and project teams in both field and office settings.
* Balance field-based assignments in remote locations with office-based technical and professional development.

The Skills That Set You Apart

* A Bachelor of Science in biology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
* Approximately one year of experience supporting environmental or aquatic field programs (including co-op or internship experience).
* Comfort working outdoors, on or near water, and in variable weather conditions.
* Willingness and flexibility to travel and work in remote locations.
* Familiarity with basic field sampling methods, GPS units, water quality meters, and standard data collection practices.
* Experience operating boats, ATVs, snowmobiles, or Argos is an asset; a Pleasure Craft Operator Card or electrofishing certification is considered an asset.
* A strong safety mindset and attention to detail in field documentation and data collection.
* Access to a personal vehicle, a clean driver's abstract, and basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
* A genuine interest in building a long-term career in environmental consulting.
