Summary of the role:
The Site Reliability Engineer (Data SRE) is responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability, performance, and operability of data platforms and database technologies used across Navitaire products and services.
This role combines strong DBA expertise, DataOps practices, and SRE principles to operate data systems at scale, automate operations, and proactively prevent incidents. The Data SRE works closely with Platform, Engineering, and Product teams to treat data platforms as reliable, observable, and resilient services.
The role has a strong focus on troubleshooting complex database and data-related issues, automation, and continuous improvement, with exposure to cloud-native environments (preferably Azure).
In this role you'll:
Reliability & Operations
* Ensure high availability, performance, efficiency and stability of data platforms (MS SQL Server, Couchbase, Redis, and Kafka).
* Act as a technical escalation point for complex database and data-related incidents.
* Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for data incidents and drive corrective and preventive actions.
* Define and monitor SLIs/SLOs for data platforms (availability, latency, throughput, saturation).
* Contribute to on-call rotations and incident management processes in alignment with SRE practices proposing solutions during hours with no development support.
* Maintain relevant alerts removing false-positive.
Database & Data Platform Engineering
* Apply strong DBA expertise to troubleshoot performance issues, capacity constraints, replication problems, and data consistency risks.
* Support schema evolution, upgrades, migrations, and lifecycle management of database technologies.
* Ensure backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies are defined, tested, and reliable.
* Support data platform observability using metrics, logs, and traces.
DataOps & Automation
* Apply DataOps principles to automate data platform operations using Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, and repeatable runbooks.
* Reduce manual operational work through automation and self-service tooling.
* Collaborate with Data Engineering teams to ensure reliable, observable, and operable data pipelines.
* Promote data quality, correctness, and operational readiness as part of production deployments.
Cloud & Platform Collaboration
* Operate and support data platforms in cloud-based environments, with a strong preference for Microsoft Azure.
* Collaborate with Platform and Cloud teams on architecture, scaling, security, and cost optimization.
* Ensure data services follow platform standards, security policies, and operational best practices.
* Continuous Improvement & Knowledge Sharing
* Drive operational maturity improvements using SRE concepts such as error budgets and post-incident reviews.
* Contribute to documentation, runbooks, and onboarding material for data platforms.
* Share knowledge and best practices across SRE, Platform, and Data communities.
About the ideal candidate:
* Bachelor's or graduate degree in engineering or equivalent work experience
* +7 yoe in DataOps / SRE / Cloud
* Hands-on experience with relational and non-relational databases.
* Proven ability to troubleshoot complex database and data-platform issues under pressure extracting and analyzing relevant logs, traces and metrics.
* Experience with production support and operations in high-availability environments.
* Solid understanding of OS Linux/windows fundamentals, networking, and storage.
* Familiarity with monitoring, alerting, and observability for data platforms.
* Experience applying SRE or DataOps practices (automation, CI/CD, reliability metrics).
* Exposure to cloud environments.
* Understanding of Infrastructure as Code and automation concepts.
* Capable to design and deliver highly efficient and scalable test system.
* Previous experience as developer is a plus.
