Job Description:
Software, the fuel for mobility
We bring bold digital visions to life. So we're on the lookout for more curious and creative engineers who want to create change - one line of high-quality code at a time. Our transformation isn't for everyone, but if you're excited about solving the leading-edge technological challenges facing the auto industry, then let's talk about your next move.
Let's introduce ourselves
We are revolutionizing the automotive industry with the fastest Software Factory!
Volvo Cars Engineering is building a unified Software Factory to support development of software-defined vehicles at scale.
The Software Factory provides the core developer platform used across Engineering: build systems, CI/CD infrastructure, artifact management, configuration management, and developer tooling. These systems are responsible for turning source code into reproducible, signed, and deployable software for the vehicle.
Our mission is to enable always-releasable, high-quality software for the car and to give development teams the confidence to build, innovate, and deliver with excellence.
We are a department within Software Engineering. Our department Software Factory and Enablers (SWF&E), lead the shift towards seamless software- and data flows through a unified software factory across Engineering. We are looking for a Lead Architect to take architectural responsibility for this platform and its evolution.
What you'll do
As Lead Architect, you are responsible for the end-to-end architecture of the Software Factory, from source code to signed artifacts. You work across teams to ensure the platform remains reliable, scalable, secure, and maintainable as engineering needs grow. You help teams make sound architectural decisions and resolve complex technical problems in the build and delivery ecosystem.
The role sits within the Software Factory leadership team and works closely with architects, technical leads, and infrastructure and security teams across Engineering. This role is both strategic and hands-on: you will define the vision, guide technical decisions, remove blockers, and elevate architectural maturity across teams.
In this role, you will be responsible to own the architecture of the Software Factory platform, define and uphold architectural principles that guide platform evolution, maintain the SWF architecture roadmap, architectural enablers, and long-term architectural runway. You will also guide the evolution of the build, test, and delivery infrastructure, and ensure the software flow supports reproducible builds, traceability, and secure artifact delivery.
You will lead architectural discussions and decision processes across teams. Work with security teams to ensure a secure software supply chain. Lead Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), RFC processes, and architectural forums to ensure alignment and transparency. Ensure architectural artifacts (diagrams, docs, models) are updated, discoverable, and widely understood. Establish guardrails, standards, and best practices for CI/CD design, artifact governance, developer tooling, and code review processes. Ensure architectural integrity around scalability, security, availability, traceability, and separation of concerns. Help diagnose and resolve complex failures in build and delivery systems. Mentor engineers and architects and contribute to the long-term health of the platform.
What you'll bring
You have experience with large-scale software platforms and developer infrastructure, including areas such as:
* CI/CD systems and build infrastructure
* Distributed development environments
* Secure software delivery and supply chain practices
* Developer platforms used by many teams
* Strong background in software development
Experience with tools such as Bazel, Zuul, Gerrit, Artifactory, and Git-based workflows is valuable but not required.
What we value
* Systems thinking and architectural clarity
* Practical technical leadership
* Clear and direct communication
* Builds strong networks across domains.
* A supportive team player contributing to an inclusive, high performing culture.
* Ownership of complex technical systems
* A focus on long-term maintainability and developer productivity
