Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LACO) located in Panama City works closely with the 33 countries of the region- including 16 small island developing States. The office works to serve the needs of the region and its activities are integrated into the work programs approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA). LACO is responsible for coordinating different initiatives under the LAC Forum of Ministers of Environment. Therefore, the interns will support the implementation of the following programmes and projects/initiatives: * Secretariat of the Forum of Ministers of Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean, including the support to the following intergovernmental networks, coalitions and working groups of the Forum: * Environmental Training Network * Circular Economy Coalition * Regional Council of Government Experts on Sustainable Consumption and Production * Regional Group on Gender and Environment * Intergovernmental Network on Chemicals and Waste * Intergovernmental Network on Atmospheric Pollution * Coalition for the progressive closure of dumpsites and reduction of methane from waste * Working Group on Plastics and Microplastics pollution, including in the marine environment * The Finance and Economic Transformations Subprogramme in the LAC region, including support to related projects and initiatives, such as IKI Eco-Advance (a regional approach to ecolabelling). * The Chemicals and Pollution Subprogramme in the LAC region, including support to related projects and initiatives, such as the UNEP Plastics Initiative, One Health and Antimicrobial Resistance, among others. This will include the following thematical workstreams: * Intergovernmental cooperation on environmental issues, including: * Sustainable Consumption and Production * Consumer information tools * Environmental Education * Sustainable lifestyles * Sustainable Public Procurement * Circular economy * Chemicals and Waste * Air Quality * Plastic pollution * One Health and Antimicrobial Resistance Under the direct supervision of the Finance and Economic Transformation, Chemicals and Pollution Subprogramme, and the Forum of Ministers' Programme Management Officers, the interns will support various initiatives and related activities. * Support the follow-up and implementation of the above-mentioned workstreams and projects. * Support with online platforms used by the teams, including: upload all the relevant information in the platform (resources and profiles submitted by the countries, abstracts of all the collected resources, webpages contempt, etc.); maintain the platform and website ongoing and updated in terms of information and activities (e.g. newsletters, agendas in the region, organization of periodical webinars and south-south cooperation bilateral exchanges). * Assist with the organization of meetings, workshops, seminars, webinars, and other similar activities, supporting the preparation of agendas, co-drafting background materials, presentation, meetings minutes and reports, and communication materials. * Carry out research, literature review, analysis and drafting of documents and summaries presenting data and information gathered from diverse sources on key environmental issues for the region. * Support project development and implementation of relevant projects by gathering relevant information and data. Five (5) Interns are sought for a six-month internship period. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Office. The internship will be at the UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office, based in Panama City, although there is flexibility in terms of the modality of work, either totally in person, remote or combined.

Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (Master's Degree programme, second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Environmental Sciences, Economics, International Relations/ Development, Social Sciences, Law, Business Administration and/or related field; OR b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent) in Environmental Sciences, Economics, International Relations/ Development, Social Sciences, Law, Business Administration and/or related field OR c. Have graduated with a university degree in Environmental Sciences, Economics, International Relations/ Development, Social Sciences, Law, Business Administration and/or related field. - Be computer literate in standard software applications. - Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include - Educational expertise focused on the United Nations is an asset. - Knowledge of critical environmental issues in the Latin American and Caribbean region is an asset. - Ability to write thematic and progress reports, including the management and visualization of data is an asset.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English and Spanish are required. Knowledge of Portuguese would be an asset.

Intern Specific text
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
