Fully in-person preferred; partly hybrid arrangement possible. This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person in New York (USA) but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate

Expected duration
The internship is designed to be in-person for a period of six (6) months. The envisioned start date is 15 June 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities
This internship is in the Policy and Planning Unit (PPU) within the Policy and Mediation Division of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). The intern will report to the Team Leader of the Policy Planning Unit. The Policy and Planning Unit is responsible for a wide range of functions related to policy analysis and cross-cutting issues in international peace and security. PPU follows diverse intergovernmental processes related to political affairs; produces analytical papers for UN senior leadership; and coordinates with the wider UN system on policy issues of relevance to the Department's mandates. As part of the Policy and Planning Unit, the intern will conduct research and policy analysis, assist in preparing diverse written products, and help organize events and meetings. The internship is for six months. This internship is UNPAID in-person and full-time (35 hours per week), on the United Nations premise working arrangement from (New York, USA). This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate to part-time (20 hours per week) and/or remote. The internship is designed to be in-person for a period of six (6) months. The envisioned start date is 15 June 2025. The internship is UNPAID and travel costs, travel arrangements (including visas) and living accommodations are the responsibility of the intern. The candidate may request to work remotely for a part of the internship but would ideally be able to be present in New York. Duties and Responsibilities The intern will work under the supervision of the Team Leader of the Policy Planning Unit, and will be responsible for one or more of the following duties: * Attend meetings, events, and conferences and draft summary reports, minutes, notes, and outline follow-up actions. * Conduct research and policy analysis within the areas of the Unit's interest, including on emerging issues in international peace and security, multilateralism, diplomacy, and international affairs. * Assist in preparing reports, concept papers, policy documents, talking points, articles, presentations and other materials, including through research, drafting, and cataloguing information and analyzing data. * Assist in organizing events, both online and on-site, providing support for tasks associated with event planning, administration, coordination, and logistics. * Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
