Get a job on campus. Go to social activities even if shy. Don't let opportunities go by. If you want to live a big city, go somewhere else. If you want to experience American way of life, come!

Course recommendations
If your home university allows it, try to get courses from different areas, not only your area of study.

Interaction with local students
Personal comments
Everything was great and the teachers were very comprehensive regarding my needs and difficulties as an international student. It would be nice to be able to choose subjects as a junior, because being international I only had freshmen status.

Personal comments
I didn't have any problems, except with some cases where language was very specific, but always had someone that would nicely explain. I knew very well the language and wanted to become proficient, which I think I almost accomplished.

Personal spending habits
Housing was cheaper when I lived at the apartment because at home I live in a big city and Des Moines was a small one. I didn't have a cell phone during my stay in the US and used internet to communicate with my family in SPain, so I saved a lot of money there. I traveled a lot more so, naturally, I spent more, but prices where cheaper than at home.

Personal comments
Living in an apartment can really save you money. Working on campus gives you extra money and is generally very well paid, specially being a language partner of you native language.

It's very nice because they organize a lot of activities for students, which is a great chance to meet people; but you have to share bathroom with the whole floor and the food is not very good.

The sports events where very well organized, I used to attend specially basketball matches. There's also Drake relays, a very important sports event. I went almost every day to Mars Cafe, which is less than five minutes from campus: it has amazing drinks and food, nice atmosphere and free wireless internet.
