Being on campus provided access to the backstreets and a plethora of international students. Who could ask for more of a Chinese University?

There was not a great deal of fitness equipment available and the rooms were relatively small. It was a University in China, though...what can one expect? If you value your space, privacy, and cleanliness, China (Hua Shi Da, anyway) is not the place for you.

Host university separates the international students from the local students. International dorm quality is much better than for the local students.

we stayed in the rooms that visiting professors usually stay in, which were more westernized than the dorm rooms where students stayed

Why?
I only decided to reside on the university campus for the first few months because it was an easy option for me to settle in. Once I felt more at home in Shanghai I moved out of the university accommodation and rented a flat independently. I would recommend this to future students because it gives you time to decide how to find a good apartment and know exactly where you want to live. It is also convenient living on campus at the beginning (meet new people, easy to find classes...)

Because I like to have my own cleaned and I like space. I like to be near the centre of the city.

If you haven't enough money, it's better to live on the campus because it's cheap. You can meet some foreign students. But if you are far of you home country, you have to be near occidental people like you because the chinese culture is particular.
