With students and teachers I spoke english but outside the campus I spoke chinese. In shanghai, it was difficult but in Beijing the people understand the Mandarin (Putonghua) more than Shanghai people. Because the dialect is different between chinese provinces.

If you haven't enough money, it's better to live on the campus because it's cheap. You can meet some foreign students. But if you are far of you home country, you have to be near occidental people like you because the chinese culture is particular.
