Make sure that you know as much German as possible before going, if a conversational German course is offered, make sure you complete it. If a buddy is offered, accept this person's help, it would be the most sensible thing you've ever done and hopefully an international friendship will flourish and remain from it.

My semester abroad was a core component of my degree course and as such I studied German at my home university before and after the study abroad. Subjects at the host university were taught in English, therefore the only opportunity to improve my German was through social outings and general conversation.
