Go to the oudermarkt...you'll have lots of places to choose. Other nice spots: Villa Ernesto (vismarkt) and the FAK Bars (student bars for each of the faculties from the university)

I think people make a lot of difference. I had the luck of having nice and friendly student mates living in the same house.

I've learnt dutch throughout the years, so it isn't a problem to communicatein either english or dutch. But in any case, everybody in belgium speaks pretty good english, so language won't be a problem here

Don't spend your money in the begining of the master!! Many students get all excited about the fact of meeting new ppl from all over the world and that stuff, and go out everyday (lunch, coffees, etc). Before you realize you've spent up to twice you thought on spending everymonth! You can save a lot of money in food by shopping in supermarkets like Lidl, Aldy or Colruyt and then cooking home. Organizing parties at the student residence is also a good alternative to going out...

I've worked and studied at the same time and been able to handle it perfectly. You should do it to...is a great way to make money to pay for expenses/travels/night outs, etc. For foreign students: you can apply for a work permit C at the city hall which allows you to work as a student 20 hours a week.
